Users who host their own images need a valid SSL Certificate

Post by JamesPerrin »

For the attention of users who host their own images online, if you are using PostImage or another images hosting services this does not apply to you.

umaf.org.uk has for some time used "https" ie secure web protocol where all traffic is encrypted using the sites SSL certificate. The issue is that because uamf.org.uk is using https any resources loaded as part of the actually page should also be https, this includes images hosted on other sites. Until now browsers have been letting you get away with this for images but it seems that Chrome has recently taken a tougher stance. https://www.gsqi.com/marketing-blog/goo ... d-content/;

If your website when accessed via https eg "https://mysite.net/spitefire.jpg" complains that the SSL certificate is invalid, then you need to take action. You need to get a valid SSL certificate installed on your webserver ie one for "mysite.net", usually can be done through the host management UI and should be free nowadays. If you have subdomains eg "images.mysite.net" then you should try to obtain a wildcard certificate eg "*.mysite.net"

This is a browser security issue and is nothing to do with the UAMF website. Though this issue current only occurs in the latest Chrome releases the other browser are likely to follow suit as all web traffic increasing moves to using https.

Happy to answer any questions, but your hosting company will be best able to direct you how to obtain the required certificate[s].

This caught me up and it has taken about a week to get sorted. It may not have been noticeable to members depending on their browser - I didn't realize it until an update to Chrome about 2 weeks ago.

Anyway, should be all good now. If you happen across any of my posts where the image isn't displayed, please PM a link to that post and I'll check it out - thanks in advance. Any questions, PM me.
