I've lost the ability to post pictures now.
when i put a picture in a post and submit i get a message saying "unable to determine picture dimensions".
I always upload in 600 x 800 but now this isnt being accepted, it seems.

It means one of a couple things:
-- you have the path and/or filename wrong.
-- you have a communication issue where the images are stored.

One simple test. Go to a previous post, one where the image is displaying and edit that post (change something) then submit the edited post. If you do not get that error, then go back to the troublesome post (above), go into edit and carefully inspect the path, filename, etc.

I tried it. This happened before. Tried deleting the images and then re-uploading them. Same results. In the end I just removed the text and didn’t bother posting , no point in posting if the supporting pictures aren’t able to appear.

I'm having the same problem suddenly. I think this may be a postimage issue.

That said, we're one of the few forums who still restricts imported image size. I'm still not entirely sure why.

That error message has nothing to do with image size.
It means one of a couple things:
-- the path and/or filename are incorrect and postimage cannot find the image.
-- there is a communication issue between where the images are stored and postimage. (garbled data)
-- postimage is having another bad day.

I’m sure the board allows gif extension ( it would only be to check it fits in the size limits).

Animated gifs are very distracting on a forum so please use with restraint.
