AMT 1/25 Chevelle SS.......
AMT 1/25 Chevelle SS.......
Next week, Su and I are going to Florida to get together with six other high-school, car-guy friends. A Mecum action and Don Garlet museum tour are on the agenda. We are staying at a friends house for the week and I thought it would be fun to build him a "Thank-You" model of his car.
I thought he had a '57 chevy, maybe he did, but now he has a '69 Chevelle SS, Frost Green with vinyl top. It isn't finished yet but almost. I secretly enlisted his wife to sneak out and take pictures of his car so I could do an exact replica.
With pics of his car in the garage in hand, the only kit around is the olde AMT, 1/25 scale Chevelle SS.
The vinyl roof and it's chrome trim are going to be a problem. I wasn't expecting this kind of challenge. So much for a good, clean out-of-box build...
Armed with internet detail pics.
I fitted and tweaked all the parts together to make sure everyone was happy. Much attention was paid to the sit or stance of the car. I lowered and futzed with the front and rear suspension for the proper squat.
But first, I tackled the vinyl roof and chrome trim. If I couldn't get that right, no sense building the rest of it. Using his car as a guide, I started with thin Evergreen strips.
This worked out better than i thought it would. I thought this was going to be an epic fail.
I then painted the vinyl roof area with liquid glue and textured it with a brush.
With this now behind me, a last test fit and then fine white Tamiya primer.
Nobody makes "Frost Green" so I came up with that myself. Pretty darn close.
The rest is all standard stuff. I painted the sub-assemblies. The roof was painted semi-gloss black with additional texturing with the brush. I used a fine "Chrome pen" for the roof trim. The headlight bezels should have a black area around the light itself but I chickened out after I had done all the wheel inserts. The kit tires were discarded and some Good Year blue streaks were put on as "Big'nFats". His wife told me what license plate will be on the car when done. All the photos below have a fuzzy right side. This is a finger print on the lens that I didn't see until after the build was done and photos downloaded so no opportunity for reshoot.
An AMT plastic display case and a little plaque, I think this is a good "Thank You" gift.
Thanks for reading this far.

Really great replica. Your friend will be thrilled.
Enjoy Mecum. I've been a few times. Great to see so many classics in one place being enjoyed by people who appreciate them

A very worthy project and an excellent outcome, Allan, I'm sure he will be well pleased with that. The Chevelle is a great looking classic American car.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
It's fun when an opportunity arises when we can build a model that isn't just to satisfy us but can be used to please someone else.
