Lightning Force: RAF units 1960-1988....

Post by CementNotGlue »

Lightning Force: RAF units 1960-1988 - A photographic appreciation of the English Electric Lightning

Another W. H. Smiths find

Plenty of colour and B&W photographs catorgrised in their respective squadrons with a history of the marks and deployment.

I wanted to know the difference between a F MK 3 and a F MK 1A. For this I have to read elsewhere or studt the photographs here.

Sounds a great book. Off the top of my head the main differences F1A to F3 were.

Fin - F1A leading edge more swept to round tip. F3 leading edge less swept (thus increasing total area) and flat fin top.

Weapons - F1A had cannons and could only carry Firestreaks. F3 had cannons deleted and usually carried Red Top but might still have been able to use Firestreaks (not sure).

IFR probe commonly carried on F3. I believe it could be fitted on F1A but it must have been quite rare if ever.

The F3 could carry Firestreak and regularly did so.

Additionally the cable ducts on the fuselage are longer on the F3.
