Airfix 1:76 WW1 Female Tank

Post by IvanV22 »

hi all.
just started on this a week ago. It’s been in the stash for som years, I see the price is 80kr, now it’s 160kr I think.

Even though I,ve made the male 2 times I still managed to make 2 mistakes, had problems connecting the rear steering wheels.
Well this is the same as the male thank, with some new parts, so I couldn’t resist myself, just had to! Attached with blue tack.

Just gave a brush layer of Vallejo primer, haven’t got my airbrush going yet, but it looks a little bit better.

Nice !
My return to modelling last year started with the male tank.
I remember it as being a simple build with a fantastic amount of fiddle for the steering wheels.
Got me hooked though.

My understanding is that the female kit is the male kit with an extra sprue.

The Tank Museum has a YouTube channel with more info on this tank.
Fighting in them must have been brutal:

I myself always had trouble with the steering contraption,I have read the real thing caused so much much trouble they soon took them off. Well tidy model.

The issue with the kit ‘steering wheels’ is that they would have you mount the hydraulic actuation unit the wrong way up!
Another of the many shortcomings of this kit is the plate that sits above the tail unit - it should be rectangular.
I’ve plans to create, sometime in the future, 3D printable correction parts.

Yes fighting in them was brutal! Read in the Hayes, owners workshop manual for the markIV, on one account a tank was out of petrol because they where under attack they had to hand feed petrol from spare tins into the carburetor!
Also they where a crew of 8 inside the land ship. If I remember correctly it was first intended to use seamen as they where used to fighting in cramped conditions.
Can recommend the Hayes book.

In the Hayes book they seem to regard the mark 1 as almost a prototype in face ov the mark 4.

The tree and green is from some cheap bag of trees,I felt they looked to plastic green so I tried adding som more shades with artist paint.
The camouflage nets are from a pack of garlic, painted with artist paint.

Very nicely done, Ivan and the plastic sweet tub (Ferrero Rocher, per chance?) is a good idea for keeping the dust away.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Work is the curse of the modelling classes!
