Anyone heard of Walther´s cornerstone P-51D in 1/87?

Got something to say about the hobby of model making?

Anyone heard of Walther´s cornerstone P-51D in 1/87?

Post by Crashpilot »

My curiosity was raised by a Mustang kit I had never heard of, so I bought it from that well-known auction site -
a Walther´s cornerstone in 1/87 - a kit so rare, that scalemates dont know about it!
AFAIK, Walther´s is a brand that does almost 1/87-railway stuff exclusively, but they have a DC-3, too, and used to have that Mustang I got hold of, too.
To my surprise, the kit looks well made, nice shapes, panel lines look good, too -
but how do I get replacement canopies now? My double-kit is missing them....
had a look at Walther´s website, they dont seem to know their own kit anymore, found no notice of it!
Waiting for the day, when wars for territory will be something to be read about in history books only.

Playing Tetris taught me: If I clean up too much, my kits disappear.....8-(

The models do look good.

Thank you both for your interest :-)
In the end, I sent the kit back, and got a refund. At least i made a test fit of the fuselage, which looked convincing (strangely, this "new", cellophaned kit had some parts clipped off already...and the inside of the box smelled of pipe tobacco....).
Another thing that struck me: the model thats shown on the box differs from the kit inside, in some ways: you see a hamilton stand. Prop in the photo, but you only get an aeroproducts one, with no choice whatsoever. Then you see inner gear doors drooping down, but the kit has them molded shut!?
A prototype form on the box, maybe?
It was a pity, giving it back, but it was the best choice i had. Nowhere an AHM kit in sight, from which to crashmold a replacement canopy...
The decals are from microscale, and look good, too.
Still no hard feelings on my side, so many 72 scale Pony kits in my stash ;-)

IIRC didn’t greggers (?) buy some train scale airfield accessories?

That I did. There was a pack of rather generic aircraft and a hangar with two Piper Cub(ish) aircraft.

All the best

The name rang a bell in my mind. We have these at work. By a company called Waltersons.
Is this the Kit?

No, thats a different kit. Before I sent the parcel, to get a refund, I took some snaps:

In the last pic, you can see the copyright from 1999, by Walther´s.
The Waltersons is 1/72.
For anyone, seeing this kit for a good price: I think I can recommend it, the proof lies in the pudding, though!
I havent tried the wing to fuselage join! only the fit of the fuselage parts.
I didnt notice any shape errors (I dont have any 1/87 scale plans to compare, though - but have built multiple D-Mustangs over the years...)
It´s NOT a re-release of AHM kit from the 70ies, either.
I´m keen to see someone building this one, and doing a review

1/87 is the actual scale ratio of HO Scale.

Ah - makes sense, thanks John.

Given the world wide domination of HO, it's mildly surprising that there are not more aircraft in this scale.
I wish, that I knew what was doing!

The driver for the myriad scales & gauges in the modeling world(s) has always been size & cost on one hand and detail on the other. Economies are achieved by shoehorning, piggybacking, and sleight-of-hand -- for example 1/64, 1/72, 1/76, 1/87 and S, OO, HO. That landscape is essentially dimensionless means the scale folks can borrow the gauge scenery. The "west is even wilder" when one looks at figures, automobiles, armor, wargames, and all.
