Vacuform "Fireball XL5"

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Vacuform "Fireball XL5"

Post by LifetimeModeler »

As a child, I "never" missed an episode of Fireball XL5 and the associated acting-out while at play afterward. I wanted a Fireball XL5 model or toy so bad, but for one reason or another, we never came together. Fast forward 53 years to the evening I happened across a 1/200th scale vacuform model of it by Comet Miniatures on ebay, in pristine condition (except the transparencies had yellowed badly and partially crushed). It was expensive (in my book) and a bidding war had ensued, but I didn't care; I saw this as my last opportunity to have one and was determined not to let it get past... and it didn't! ;)

I used the flat sandpaper/masking tape method to individualize the pieces, and cut interior supports from sheet plastic. Besides that, I thermoformed new transparencies and scratched a cockpit, with figures. (hey, I was going for it because the long lost "kid" in me had reemerged!!) ;) I painted it with Testors Enamel and sealed it with Pledge; amazingly, the old kit decals worked perfectly after a coat of glosscoat, and now it hangs in the cave; my favorite amongst them all! I told my family if there's ever an emergency when we have to get out, grab the XL5!! ;)

That's fantastic, Frank. I have that in the stash and really appreciate your idea of using the bottom of Junior's nose to be the mould to replace the treacly transparency. A beautiful model.

Fantastic rendition. Comet did some really classic kits from British SciFi. I’ve built their Liberator from Blake’s 7 ( Doctor Who but even less budget)

That is absolutely stunning; a tribute to your skills. 8-)

And how often do we see instructions that treat you to "Pod "somehow" securely mounted at this angle". Kids these days don't know what they're missing with their game consoles

That. Looks. Good!

One of the best XL5 models I've seen, and also one of the best renditions of the Comet XL5. I particularly like the understated shading/weathering. Too many models like that look as though they've just flown through the Coal Sack and too much dust stuck. This one gets it just right -- enough difference between panels to show that they're there, but not so much that the ship looks like it could do with a trip to the Space City car wash.

Very well done.
