Telford 2012 - Ideas and planning

Post by TomW »

Okay, now I know that Telford 2012 is a long way off right now but I would like for us all to get our display plans set in stone at the earliest possible opportunity, in order to give everyone the longest possible build time.

The plan is to have two 6` tables again like last year so we can either split as before or go for one homogenous display, I am drawn towards two half displays personally but tell me what you want to see.

A few ideas that I have been toying with are:

1. to reboot last years strike display, adding the originally planned E-boats and Luftwaffe elements.
2. An ASR / SAR display, to let us show the lifeboat equipped types, rescue helo's etc, a lesser publicised side to CC.
3. Long range patrol, again pinched from last years ideas but one that would have real eye - impact, and I have a Shack' that I can build for it.

So, Ideas and discussion people, lets see what our collective conciousness comes up with.

All good ideas, Tom. From my point of view, any contribution has to be easily shipped to the UK, so a helicopter would be perfect.

It's not a good year for me to go off into new themes.
For offerings, I have:
-- my Hampden TB1 from the recent SKGB; this could fit in a strike wing (#1) but we wouldn't have coordinated markings as last year.
-- a Fortress I with ASR1 radar -- see thread here. This would fit #3, from a "development" perspective -- Fortress I did long range patrol but not with the radar; that was only a test.

If either/all are not desired, let me know as the Fortress is in-progress.

I wasn't sure if the two display types would work when it was tried last year, but it seemed to be well received, and it does allow two themes. This is al provided the IPMS OK two tables. They have done so far, but if there's a deluge of requests they could be rationed. However, I seem to remember at the last SIG Leaders meeting they were talking about expanding the show area, so in theory it should be a safe bet to get two tables again.

I like the ASR theme, and there's also the even less know Meteorological aspect of CC to cover too.

Also we need to keep in mind that we had lots of visits from ex CC crew members. The year before last when we had a Shackleton on the display we had a lot of Neptune crew members visit. I then built the Neptune for last year, and then we had mainly Shackleton crew. I guess if we have both a Shackleton and Neptune on display we'll have lots of Nimrod crews turn up...

Hmmm, if we go with #2, I guess I can dig something up to suit, but can't do 7 like last year.
I think adding the Met Flights to #2, as Julian suggests, would be a good idea - sneak in a Gladiator (didn't we have a discussion about Met Gladiators a while back ?).

#2 really popped into my head when I found the Rescue Launch that I'm currently working on, got me thinking about all the other roles that CC covered apart from sub-hunting / convoy patrol, adding the Met flights into the idea would be great from my point of view.

Some possible types that would suit include:

Anson
Hudson
Lancaster
Warwick
Whirlwind
Sycamore
Hastings
Gladiator
Spitfire
Hurricane
Ventura
Fortress

Incidentally PRU can also be included if we go for 'the other sides of CC' as a theme.

I have both a Contrail Warwick and Formaplane Hastings, which I had been intending to build as as ASR Warwick and a CC Hastings at some stage. So if an ASR there is adopted I guess I could build at least the Warwick with lifeboat.

If we are looking at the "other side" of CC, I started thinking about how to tie that together and the thought crossed my mind that a squadron might have had changing roles, so I dug into my books and surfaced with 202 Sqn. You can see the history below from inception to present; it has had bombing, corps recon, maritime patrol, search & rescue, meteorological, and a few others.

If 202 itself isn't quite enough, at two times it was disbanded and then reformed from other squadrons -- I have shown that also below.

Might be tough, but we could possibly do a 202 Sqn historical display, lineage & honors, display .. don't need to do all aircraft, just representative of the history .... If we added 518 & 228, then we could have a small tree with an a/c or two from 518/228 to show their lineage (which really is inherited by 202).

What is below is somewhat shorthand and I've left out the movement data and many dates which might help us, but I'll save filling all that in until we decide ...

Just a thought ....

An interesting idea, John. A good selection of types, including some smaller ones, which fits my bill.

I'm still liking John's idea. I have a good reference - the Hylton Lacey "Famous Maritime Squadrons of the RAF" which has a history of 202 from formation to around 1968, with tons of useful photos and some profiles. Also, the 202 Squadron Association website is most informative:

http://www.202-sqn-assoc.co.uk/home.html;

I already have a Sea King in Rescue markings that just needs the badge changed, and I have those on a Modeldecal sheet. If I can find a conversion set, I can do the Whirlwind, as I have the Italeri kit just waiting.

Am I sensing a lack of interest here, or is everyone just too busy with other things at the moment? Shouldn't we be making a decision pretty soon? :???:

Well looking at everyones thinking we have either:

1. A general ASR and Meteriological display.

or

2. A history of 202 sqn, to include 518 and 228 as progenitor squadrons.

I really like the idea of focussing on one individual squadron and think John has come up with a cracker, and as long as everyone else agrees then I think we have a winner.

Now we just need a full list of aircraft for everyone to make their selections from.

Having said all this, I see 5 contributors to the thread.

I have another thought as the 202 Sqn thing may be a bit hard to decently throw together unless all the other SIG members have 202(518,228) aircraft already built in proper markings. Maybe we should do the SAR/Met general display this year, with any new builds being 202/518/228 as best possible. Then we start working toward next year for a full 202/518/228 display.
