1/72 DH. Sea Venom FAW22

Post by DavidWomby »

De Havilland Sea Venom FAW22 XG731 of 891 Squadron aboard HMS Centaur in 1960.

I knew about the Sea Venoms being used in anger during Operation Musketeer but it seems that their final combat use was later. Operation Damon was an RAF operation against dissident tribes in Yemen and, from what I've read, HMS Centaur's Sea Venoms participated in rocket and cannon attacks when she passed through Aden in early 1960. So I've depicted her with the full load of 8 rockets en route to an attack. I haven't actually found a photo of any Sea Venom carrying that load but I am sure an obvious one will now, doubtless, be quickly pointed out to me!

This is the old Frog kit. I have always thought it looked pretty accurate but the radome just looked too bulbous to me. So this one has one made from a spare from the MBox Meteor NF. It needed some filler to fair it in and the area between it and the windscreen needed to be sloped down a bit toward the radome.

The decals are a mix of homemade and spares from old builds. Annoyingly, the walkway stencils silvered.

Always good to see the old Frod Sea Venom built. Nice work with the nose.

Another really good D.H. twin boomer David - you're really building up the collection. An interesting bit of history too - I'd not heard of that one.

Very nice !

Poor old HMS CENTAUR got remarkably little press compared with the larger carriers, so its nice to see her aircraft represented. Aden and the Radfan are somewhat lost eras too.

That is a lovely looking build David and the story is interesting too. I have that kit almost finished in the stash somewhere so must dig it out and finish it now I am inspired by yours. I don't know much about Sea Venoms but must admit I always thought the nose was a bit odd as you say but I don't know if I have the nerve to attempt the rhinoplasty that you have done on yours, even though it looks so much better. I even have a spare Matchbox NF.11 so I don't really have an excuse. I also have the Matchbox 1/32 Sea Venom in the stash so maybe could use that for reference, along with photos I saw of the dismantled one in the Malta Aviation Museum a few years ago.

Thanks, everyone.

Al, your last photo really shows how wrong the Frog radome is!!!

BTW, that's a great little museum at Ta' Qali, isn't it? Highly recommended for anyone lucky enough to visit the fascinating island of Malta.

Nice build. The combination of this and the Frog F.B 9, made for a range of vampire conversions according to ancient SAM magazines. Mine, unmade, is still acting as loft insulation!

Nice one David, the nose mods have certainly made a definite improvement to its appearance.
