M-51 Super Sherman

This is coming on a treat, great work with the mods and the paint. Apart from the gun, that searchlight is certainly something of a focal point!

They're not always the best or most accurate, but you turn them into real showpieces. This one seems poised to be next in line

This certainly seems to capture the Goliath gun on a bean look of the I-sherman much better than the Tamiya kit I built.

The AFV Club tracks went on nicely, and I think they are worth the time and effort involved in building them up. The lifting eyes have been picked out with fire orange. Why this was done by the IDF crews I do not know, but it was a thing.



The jerry cans in their holders were assembled and fitted, as was a M2 machine gun from the Academy US Machine Guns set. This is certainly one of the better 1/35 M2s available. Everything got a wash of burnt umber, raw umber, and black oils in odourless thinner and some chipping was applied here and there using Ammo shadow rust and a toothpick. I also used a little Ammo washable rust here and there and streaked that out. The rear stowage bin was populated with an assortment of Academy and Tamiya items before the whole thing was flat coated with Vallejo Premium Airbrush Color flat varnish.

Weathering was completed with a 2B pencil to simulate bare worn metal here and there, and finally Mig rubble pigment was applied liberally over the lower parts and tracks, mixed with odourless thinner and then once dry the excess was brushed off with a soft wide flat brush. Last job of all was to do the vision blocks in the commander's cupola with Glue'n'Glaze, which works well.

Calling this finished.











It's a nice and really quite inexpensive kit of an interesting subject. It compares more than favourably to the Tamiya M51 kit despite showing its age in a couple of areas. Certainly one of the more unusual Shermans for the collection.

That's an exceptional model. You really put a lot of work into the details and weathering and it pays off in spades.

Excellent work. The stowage looks great on it too. I like the idea of the soft lead pencil to do the chipping. I will have try that too. It is probably more controllable in 1/72 than a brush for very fine chips and scratches.

To be super precise I don't do the chipping itself with a 2B pencil, I use Ammo "chipping" and "shadow rust" acrylic paints applied sparsely with a toothpick for that part. Not because of any magic properties, they are simply the exact correct (to my own eye) shades and available straight off the shelf for consistency's sake if nothing else. The pencil is for "newly scuffed paint" and the bright edges of oxidised chipping. Used sparingly, and after any flat coating, it's quite effective.
