A few notes on the aircraft list with regards to kits.

The Anson T.21 is available from Aeroclub - I have one - and is not really practical from either the Airfix or Special Hobby kits.

The Whirlwind HAR.10 would need a conversion set, as none of the stated kits features the Gnome nose.

The Sunderland V has a different hull, I believe, from the earlier versions, and would mean an extensive conversion from the Airfix kit.

These practicalities aside, it would be a tough ask to complete even a representative selection of 202 Sqn a/c in the time left, so perhaps John's idea is best - a more generic display this year, but looking ahead to doing 202 next year.

Would the 202 Sqn be on both tables? Or are we going just for one table this year? On Squadron is a nice idea, but it would mean new builds from most people as I don't know if many would have 202 Sqn planes already completed.

Perhaps one table could be 202 and the other generic CC? If we are going for two tables?

What I currently have available for either display is a Sea King that could be put into 202 markings in no time. For an SAR/Met display, I do have the Hasegawa Lancaster ASR.III built and ready to go. I could do a Glad or Hurri as well.

I think both HAR 10 conversions only work with the Italeri Whirlwind, so no CBK/CC combo. Although I did use the Heritage conversion with the Airfix kit and it was a real struggle and looks wrong. I subsequently found that the Airfix is too small for the nose. You can fit the Airfix fuselage inside the Italeri!

I was planning on requesting two tables for this years display as we have had for the previous two seasons, so perhaps one half as a generic ASR/Met display with new builds in 202/228/518 markings as John suggested looking forward to 2013 as a unified single squadron history display.

The other could be a reboot of the Strike wing from last year, Julian still has the models and I would be happy to build an E-boat or two (Airfix early and Revell late) to give the Wing more targets to hit. The Flak ship and her winged opponents garnered a lot of attention and positive comment last year so it would be nice to bring them out again.

I have updated list with Anson, Sunderland, Whirlwind HAR10 comments from Paul & Julian. But, one can make a "cheap" Sunderland V by just moding the other parts and most folks will never know ...

Right then Gents - I would like us to reach a decision by the end of April with regards to our display project.

The IPMS returns have been sent in and a request for two 6ft tables has been made, one of which I would like to use to show the Strike Wing in action again, Bruce is currently building an S-100 type E-boat in the ship GB to complement the Flak ship and I can contribute either another of the same class with different weapons fit or an early S-7 type boat from the Airfix kit, I also have access to a 6 x 4ft painted Wargaming table that depicts a seascape to use instead of a sheet.

The second table is where I would like to see a decision reached, please vote on the ideas we have so far, I unfortunately don't have the required permissions to create a poll so a straw count of posts will have to do.

Please do vote otherwise I shall be forced to put on my Dictators hat and make the decision for you

First off I applied some thought and then I troubled over how to express it!

This is as far as I got...

I like to two-display idea.

I'd like a repeat of the flakship dio, more more developed than last time. This isn't, by any means, a slur on Julian. Far from it. I like the idea of a repeated, but evolving display. People who attend shows often like to see 'old favourites', but I think they'd like to see things develop, albeit slowly.
So this year will have more...er...opposition and I think a better base cloth or something would be helpful.
That's one display sorted! ;-)

For the second, I'm a little uncomfortable with going straight into one specialised role, with one squadron.
Call me linear, but I like progressions.
With the CBK, we covered Airfix, then Matchbox and then FROG.
We then united the CBK under the 100 Kits and then did the boxart stuff.

For CC, in year one, we gave a taste of what's possibly to come.
Perhaps this year, we could either give an historical development-type pictures, with models of the early stuff, working through WW2, through Neptunes, Shackletons and maybe a Nimrod...ending up with an old guy looking out to sea with his binoculars!

Alternatively, there could be an indication of the actual roles performed;
Patrolling and reconnaissance.
Anti-shipping (covered in display 1).
SAR
Weather
Supply
Escort of subs, etc..

I believe that;
Any display should catch the interest of the most casually passing visitor.
It should be educational and promotional.

So it should not only attract those who flew weather watches in Wellies, but it should attach passing sprogs and, if I'm honest, a display focussing on the weather would not...yet.

I also believe it important to be aware of public response to a display. It is on the basis of this that the boxart is getting a second outing. After this year, we may better be able to guage what, besides things exploding, stirs public interest. For example, if there's a lot of interest in the weather-beaten weather fleet, then more effort could be applied to that particular aspect in a future display.

Speaking of The Future, for each role, there's a potential 'History of...' display beckoning.

Other display ideas could include one to illustrate the cooperation with other forces. This is hinted at with the Mustang escort in the Flak ship, but more could be done.
Significant events/actions as potential.
Whilst the CC is not the CBK, we could illustrate CBK coverage of CC subjects.
Alternatively, CC as represented by all model brands.

Them's me thoughts...please chew on them and swallow or spit out as required.

Bruce

I'm easy .... Two displays are fine. I have nothing invested in the single squadron history, it was just an idea from previous talks.

If the desire on the flakship dio is more targets, then I'm probably not the one to add anything useful. More attackers, maybe.

As to the other table, as I previously noted, you have my Liberator and Whitley, although the latter may be overshown. The Lib did not make it through the mail system in time for SMW2011 and so would be fresh, although I think Julian took it a couple other places.

To that I can add my Hampden TB1 (see the GB) and my in-progress Fortress I with the ASW antennas -- that will be something a bit different.
Let me know as my dance card is full.

As to future, my interests are the early years (the roots so to speak), prior to formal fomation of CC in 1936, and I could work on some of those 'early birds' ...

Because I am well and truly committed with builds for CBK and AMSIG for SMW I wouldn't event attempt to suggest what direction the CC display take, but will endeavour to contribute to whatever theme is chosen. I can't help feeling a "real" sea baseboard for at least half of the table would be nicer than a blue cloth, but I know there are practicalities to be observed as well. However, if I've time left in October say, I could chuck some blue and green poster paint and some bathroom sealant over a few thin MDF sheets if anyone would like that.

cheers
Al.

Firstly apologies for letting things slide again time wise  I have no wish to bore anyone so I won't be wheeling out the excuses!

There has been no response as yet from the IPMS as regards table allocations ( I didn't expect one yet to be honest) so we are still no more enlightened to the physical display space we will have this year.

I still, however, wish to proceed with a twin display layout. One of these will be the Flakship display as previously discussed, we will have access to extra targets and an improved baseboard to develop this display further.

For number two I would like to combine all our thinking from the past few months and go for:

'A Distinctly Coastal Flavour' (Final name to be thought of by someone with far more imagination thatn myself  )

A display to give the general public a better understanding of what Coastal Command was and what its lingering remnants do today.

I'm thinking of 4 sections to the table:

1. Patrol and Recon
2. ASR / SAR
3. Met flights
4. Today and the future??

And I think maybe 4 to 6 models per section? or is this too many or too few?

Thoughts and feelings please gentlemen.

A Whiff Of Ozone?

Anyway, for one table, 24 models isn't overdoing it, as long as we're not talking exclusively Sunderlands and Libbies!
Today and the Future would be just too embarrasing, in my opinion. There's only so much you can do with a bloke stood on a cliff, with a pair of bins!
The other 3 have potential, even for older and newer;
RAF Rescue Launch, RNLI Severn Class and a Sea King or 2.
Patrol and Recon: Stranraer, Anson, Shackleton and Nimrod
Weather...anything small and unexpected, (by Joe Public).

If Today & Future isn't worthwhile, then replace with strike aircraft, or is that adequately covered by table #2 ?
If so then I can keep my Hampden TB1; it wouldn't fit well on the flakship display as we didn't coordinate color schemes.

You have my Whitley & Liberator for patrol/recon.
I still intend to finish the Fortress I with ASR aerials - that'll be different.

I might be able to squeeze in a small Met aircraft; I'll have to do some research - I have "Even the Birds were Walking" (sic) ....

I like that  , you have a fair point on the paucity of 'today and future' opportunities Bruce, maybe we could go with the first three and expand the number of models per section?? Or we could look at a 'Post Coastal Command' section so we could include Sea Kings and Nimrods. Not that we are lacking in suitable display candidates.

I think the Flakship display really conveys the Strike element in a suitably dynamic way. I'd love to see the Fortress on the table John, It'll be a great early piece for the ASR section. The same goes for a small Met bird, maybe a Gladiator or a Hurricane?

Personally I have an E-boat planned along with a Shackleton and I should be able to fit in one more as well.

I took a quick look through "Even the Birds Were Walking", and I emphasize quick ....

RAF Air Ministry Met Flights: Siskin, Woodcock, Bulldog, Wallace, Gauntlet, Brisfit, Gladiator
These would be pre-CC. Looks like they were picked for fast climb to high altitude & then back again ....

Coastal Met:
-- 517 Sqn: Blenheim, Hudson, Hampden, Fortress
-- 518 Sqn: Oct 36: Bulldog, Gladiator; then similar to the others.
-- 519 Sqn: Spitfire, Hudson, Fortress

I'm looking for photos of any of these; esp Bulldog or Gladiator
