It's the good ol' YCNHTM Spitfire GB - any kit, any scale, any era, and mark, it's just got to be a Spitfire/Seafire ...

Jeff's What about BoB build***DNF***

Post by jssel »

My game plan is to build the 1/32 scale Revell Spitfire MkIIa as featured in this kit.

The Innards: Inspected but not started:

The decals:

A clue to the kit lineage:

This is not the old 1966 kit with the working features nor is it the new mould. But it is the re-boxing of the Hasegawa kit with extras. There are additional parts for the extended wing tips, three different airscrews including a four blades one, and a long range fuel tank and Volkes air filter. I will not comment on accuracy but it smacks of SPITFIRE just setting in the box.

Roll on February 28th. I will being doing PR*Z P8089 but back dated with black spinner and no ID tail band.

My favorite scheme is NK*K but everyone does that one or DW*K. I mean other Squadrons did serve in the BoB, right?

That's the same kit I built last time, only with a different scheme.

It's a nice kit - the cockpit parts are a little fiddly, but once you have them done and dusted, the rest is a piece of cake, old chap!

You might want to take longer than three days to do yours, though! ;-)

And so it begins.

Trimming out and assembling some of the cockpit pieces.

Skipping ahead I assembled the wings and horizontal stabilizers. Also added the wingtip pieces which a little filing will match up very well.

Nice kit - it will be a treat to watch you build this one, Jeff.

Last night's festivities included painting interior parts Tamiya's Interior Green.

A test fit of the seat bracket shows a bit of warpage. I clamped it this morning and thing went into alignment well.

And so the clamp applied enough pressure to get the bracket all lined up and now I will work on a back cushion.

Old school instrument panel. I am quite impressed with the engraving and detail of the piece and once the paint was put on and a little dry brushing brought out even the dials. Now a little gloss for the bezels. Acceptable enough with out the multiple layers of the newer kits.

Have a morning update on the Spitty.

One stumbling block I faced was I had no Sutton Harness on the stash and 1/32 scale it would be very noticeable. So following the modern mantra "Google is your friend", I found a layout on line. Printed it out and re-sized and voila: I had a paper Sutton harness. What do you think?

After a bit of wrestling the cockpit fit into the fuselage well.

And now the fuselage is buttoned up.

Pressing on to get this one on Ops.

Looks great so far. Good trick with the harness too!
Best wishes

Thank you for looking gents.

@O-T. Some fit issues as compared to modern kits but nothing out of the ordinary. The cockpit piece took a little effort to hit all the glue points but once the alignment was done it all slipped together. I have test fit the wing and there seems to be a step along the wing fuselage line but maybe I haven't got that sorted yet. Not a bad build up to this point.

A paper harness. Reminds me of the old model magazine where you could cut out and fold a cockpit to place in the model. It was a UK publication but the name escapes me right now.

I think it was 'Scale Aircraft Modelling' ....and I'm sure I have one of the paper Hellcat cockpits around somewhere!

Sorry no pictures right now but I have the wing mounted to the fuselage with additional support of tape and super glue. There is still a step at the join line but nothing my trusty belt sander can't handle. With 200 grit. What doesn't get sanded down will melt into the seam. :-D Buzzzzzzzzzzz-zoom. Some much deserved bench time tonight so pics will follow.
