Lancfan's Luftwaffe Udet Rescue Buoy ***FINISHED***
With my classic Airfix and Hurricane builds all but finished I can start work on this GB, for this build I will scratch build a 1/72 scale model of the Luftwaffe 'Lobster Pot' Rescue Bouy based on a balsa wood core. If time permits I will follow this with a similar model of the RAF 'Cuckoo' Rescue Float, and just in case here is the freshly glued balsa wood Cuckoo hull blank.
Now joined together with PVA wood glue these have been strapped up and left to one side to dry in the sunlight which keeps hiding behind the clouds!
The first stage was to clean up the sides and cut and sand the block back to the correct plan view shape.
Then I carved the faceted panels into the top and cut out a shallow opening to create the illusion of an interior for the finished model.
The buoy tapers inwards slightly below the waterline and that is the last feature to be shaped.
The hull of the buoy is now shaped and ready to be sealed. After that It will then be time to get out the plastic card and stretched sprue.
David.

These buoys are an oft forgotten or over-looked item of the Battle of Britain. Many a battle was fought over who got to keep the occupants of these.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Hi David
This will be fun to watch have you see this link about the Cuckoo raft? http://www.scubadolphins.org.uk/images/ ... e%20Up.pdf
Back in the 70's there used to be a Cuckoo float in Portland harbour that we practiced winching on and off from the helicopters based at Portland.

The block has been sealed with sanding sealer and primed and undercoated with Revell aqua, the base of the tower and the hatch ring have been glued down over the hole.

Re: Lancfan's Luftwaffe Lobster Pot
The basic shell of the tower has been vac formed and is shown dry fitted to the model, a balsa wood display stand has been made up for the finished model to rest on.

Re: Lancfan's Luftwaffe Lobster Pot
The roof, doorway and some simple interior details have been fitted to the tower which has in turn been fitted to the hull. The footholds and the aerial mast have been fitted to the model.
More fittings have been glued on to the tower and the lower hull has been painted starting with sections of the edges which are then dipped in Bicarbonate of Soda, the surplus was then tapped off, this represents the surface rust under the paint at the edges. When this had dried the rest of the lower hull was painted red oxide using Revell 83 Rust.
