Re: Splash's bird on a stick
How I did the wood effect
Requirements:
Base coat I used tamiya XF-78 deck tan, (I use acrylics as a base coat as the top coat of oil paint will not react)
oil paint Winsor & Newton Raw Umber ( very usefull colour as it makes an excellent dirty wash if thinned down)
Thinners I use Daler Rowney Low Odour Thinners for two reasons it does not react with the Acrylic paint and has a low odour
Paint brush a small size 6 synthetic flat shader brush works fine as it gives a vey smooth flat finish
Top coat Tamiya X-26 clear orange as it gives a plesent colour and depth to the finish
The trick is use very little oil paint and push hard with the brush to get the grain effect, if the effect is too strong, just go over it with a clean brush lightly, to smooth out the effect, or add a very small drop of thinners to the brush to tone it down.
Finally once the oil is dry, give it one or two top coats of clear orange, the last image shows the effect of one and two coats.
I hope this kind of makes sence

Great primer Alan. Looks easy enough.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

Re: Splash's bird on a stick
Nice tutorial Splash. That's the way I saw it described somewhere else, and that's the way I've done it, although not as nicely as yours

Re: Splash's bird on a stick
This is starting to be a kit that I could fully recommend people build
So far nothing has caused me any stress, yes it needs lots of fettling to get the parts to fit but no more than the other limited run kits out there on the market.
The detail on the white metal parts really stands out with a dark wash and the decals are very thin but have a dense white that shows no sign of colour bleed from the dark colours underneath. I understand from reading the instructions that Pegasus double print their decals to ensure the density, but do give a warning not to use decal setting solutions.
