Wot, pray tell, is a CMOT Dibbler?!?
"And that's cutting me own throat!" CMOT Dibbler, hopeless but optimistic entrepreneur character in Terry Pratchett's "Discworld".

He's a recurring character from Terry Prachett's Discworld series Shaun - a Street seller that's always flogging dodgy stuff at knock down prices - or 'cutting me own throat' CMOT Dibbler.

If you've never read any, try and pick up a copy of 'Guards Guards' - it's always been my favourite.

Cheers

His real name is Claude Maximillian Overton Transpire Dibbler, Ankh Morpork's chief purveyor of finest "meat" pies (guaranteed no rat).

And, as Stu points out, the character recurs quite often throughout the Discworld novels. My favourite is the oriental Disembowel Meself Honourably Dibblah flogging dodgy 1000 year old eggs in the Agatean Empire.

Here's the parts to the WEM Flak-Lighter - 3 resin and a hand-full of photoetch - the card kit part count is significantly higher.

I have done some inter-webby-searching-buying and found some highly detailed flak guns for both; still looking for a better 88 for the WEM kit, it's just a lump. Still need to buy some figgies also but that can wait ...

Thanks, Fred, but have them 'over here', my fun meter pegged out. I may wait and do some at 'show' shopping so I can see them - I know about PE ones, but I saw some that were more 3-D but I want to see the poses vis-à-vis the weapons being manned ....

And I spent a "pleasant" hour keying some of the Polish instructions for the card kit into Google translate .... next step is to photocopy into 1/350 ....

Hi folks,

I've read the entire thread, including the list of possible aircraft codes.

Now, I have no background knowledge on participants on the Black Friday mission, but I do have the Xtradecal sheet 72227, which includes NE686 EO-T, flown by Fg Off Flynn and PO Michael of 404 Sqn RCAF, from Dallachy, on 9 February, which implies it took part. If this is OK, I'd do my 1/72nd model in these markings. Please let me know.

I also note that the F-toys 'Gashapon' TF.X (with radar nose and extended fin fillet) which I have includes the markings for PL-F. I didn't find this on the list of aircraft participating on Black Friday. Could somebody confirm or not if these markings would be OK for my 1/144th aircraft. Ta.

Finally, any sage advices on how I should prepare these aircraft for display (I was going to say, "mounting these aircraft," but didn't want to give anyone the wrong impression ;-) ) would also be appreciated. I am assuming that a clear acrylic dowel would be the mounting of choice.

regards,

Martin

I don't see PL-F on the list, but you could easily repaint as PL-R. :)

404 changed their sqn code at some point - for Black Friday, their code was EE. Both Tom and I will have extra codes/serials available in the near future and we can send you some then. 8-)

I was, coincidentally, also just thinking about how to display the models. I am sure Tom has an idea in his head. My questions are;

1. How many of each type and in what scales?

2. I understand we'll be 'pole-mounting' them, but what heights and what angles will they be displayed at?

3. Will we be using James' prop blurs?

A few things to be thinking about, Tom, before we get too much further! ;-)

And as a reminder, the "intended targets" have asked some questions also ....
jRatz wrote:OK, time to get started.

I have my card model flak-lighter. A side benefit is that the magazine also had about a dozen color profiles of Flower corvettes, many I had not seen before. Yay!!

The card model is in Norwegian waters camo of 1945 - effectively 3 shades of blue-grey and that's what I'll do the WEM kit in also.

Just to check scale, at 1/350 a flak-lighter will be about 5.6" long - please verify that is what we are thinking. While the resin kit is what it is, I can adjust the card model easily.

What are the plans for the base ? My concern is if I should build waterline or will there be enough depth to make holes for the flak-lighters to drop in. The card kit is "easy enough" to make waterline, but the WEM kit is not. Fortunately, at 1/350, it only appears to draw about 0.18", so maybe simple holes are easiest ? I can provide a template, it will be a simple rectangular cut.

It appears the attacking aircraft are coming from off the port bow, maybe 20-30 deg ? I think the best I can do is build both to be firing within some limited angle off the port bow and let you "adjust" that by where the location and orientation of the holes. Is there any desire to have the aft guns firing at aircraft that overflown and are departing ? Or do you want the two lighters to be at (much) different angles (to Z33) rather than neatly in a formation?

I know it is early, but I'm interested in getting this firmed up so I can get started ASAP. And yes, I can hold off mounting guns until fairly late, but the waterline decision is a very early one. We also need to establish a "good idea" cut-off date.

If we stay with 1/350, I'll go look for some PE weaponry & details for the card kit ....

Do we need muzzle flashes & all that? I'd actually prefer I got the models done early, shipped over, and someone could handle those details 'over there' ....

Build here or "out on" UAMF? Do you want a build forum set-up or what/where ?

Conveniently, the Z.32 comes with the "full hull" option as a separate part, which should snick nicely into place. I plan to build her as the waterline option, and the stand and hull underside separately, so when she's served her time in the Norwegian Fjord, I can pop her onto the display base....

A few things to be thinking about, Tom, before we get too much further! ;-)

I have a feeling the 404 codes changed at a point before Black Friday to the 'EO' prefix Paul, I only mention it as all the options on my decal sheet are 'EO' marked aircraft.

Now to all the points in order:

1. Current plans call for 3 x 1/72 and 3 x 1/144 (which is what we currently have offers for) I think we could add another flight of 3 x 1/72 if enough people want to build them. Extras in this scale can be built wheels down to go with the background info on the remaining 4ft of display space.

2. Pole mounted yes and can we all use clear acrylic rod please. An idea that Matt suggested is that these rods be fitted to MDF bases (large enough to support without the aircraft toppling over) say 6 to 8mm thick and painted/shaped to represent pack ice. The fiord was heavily iced at the time of the attack and therefore provides us a useful way of 'hiding' the bases. With regards to height and angle - I am not yet sure of height but angle should be a slight downward aspect to the nose (descending to attack height) but neutral in regards port/starboard roll angles.

3. I think that James' prop blurs are the right choice to use. I will have to place an order with him for some stock ;-)

And now for you John - and I apologise for the delay in answering your post, I had seen it when you posted but got distracted before replying and subsequently forgot  :

1. Norwegian waters camo is spot on for the location and scenario so that's great.

2. Just under 6" will fit nicely in the area I have planned in my head, the Destroyer will be about 8 to 9" long I think but I'll need Matt to confirm this.

3. The 'water' on the base will be provided by our standard 'Sea grey' display cloths so on small bases please John. Perhaps depicting pack ice as I have described above - although the ships would be sitting in a broken up area.

4. The description of the attack states that the Z32 was positioned adjacent to the shoreline with the escort vessels disposed fore and aft of her. The attack waves were forced to attack on a single bearing and departed on a similarly singular course ie a nice straight line over the anchorage so I would expect the gunners to be firing along that line in whichever way made them most accurate.

5. Muzzle flashes are optional although I am going to ask Matt if he can replicate the flak bursts he made for the box-art dioramas. They would certainly add even more animation to the scene.

6. Build location is entirely your choice John. In here is where I expect most action to occur but I will be posting my builds on my Workbench to in order to act as free advertising - not everyone will look down here in the SIG sections.

Hope that clears up a few things chaps, Keep asking the questions and I'll keep trying to answer  . And John is right when it comes to a good idea cut-off point. I am intending to have the scenic components wrapped up by April/May 2016 so final pole heights and flight positions will be finalised by that point. I don't want to be making big changes / decisions after that time.

Regards

Tom
