Matt B's Happy Hippie Hemi... ***FINISHED***
...cos I'm such a long-hair...
Well done to Secret Santa... a left-field choice, on the wilder shores of my comfort zone. I've certainly never done any kind of Rod or Dragster, and this is one of the all-time classics, now happily reincarnated by Round2. First job is to decide what base colour to use under the Hippie Hemi flower-power decals. It could be metallic red, purple, or blue...
Some thinking ahead...
Thank you, SS!
bestest,
M.

Interesting to say the least!
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Re: Matt B's Happy Hippie Hemi...
Apologies to my SS.... I've not been ignoring this, but I have had some issue with getting the photography set-up in place, and posting progress!
So, this is what the outside of the box looked like on Boxing Day:
...and this is what I found inside:
Since then, the engine has been occupying me:
I'm going for a full on chrome and hemi-orange thing...
The rear wings of the body in place. The top and bottom halves have a visible seam on the real thing, so I'll paint them while tacked together, and then separate them...
And this is the main body frame assembled. Not sure what colour I want to paint this...
bestest,
M.

That looks like an interesting build. As for the framework, paint it black (cue the music ). Black & orange always look good.

Re: Matt B's Happy Hippie Hemi...
Slow but steady progress...
Body painted using Zero Ferrari red and Lexus blue, which I had to hand, for a Purple Power effect. First the base coat. This will be the first time I've tried the Zero 2K approach with decals in the base-decal-clearcoat "sandwich"
First light clearcoat followed by decals (the first clearcoat stops them silvering)
That'll do me. Full wet clearcoat on and cured. No issues with the decals at all.
I tried black, but I thought red looked better (and is more like the "real" thing...
Distributor wired. Engine's nearly done (just fuel lines to add). I think it will go together quite speedily now!
bestest,
M.

Wow that's looking smart.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.
Re: Matt B's Happy Hippie Hemi...
Thanks, chaps! On the home stretch now (as I should be, given the date!)
That's the engine done. The exhaust headers have no positive location, with just a pair of very vague "pins" and equally vague "dimples" in the block, so I ended up having to build a jig. They're pretty solidly attached now, though. I used Citadel Nuln oil as a wash to bring out some of the casting detail.
Firewall and diff in position, and that oh-so-essential braking parachute.
The hot seat. The straps are moulded detail which paints up quite nicely...
Engine in place. You can see the rather precarious position of the driver, whose legs reach over the top of the diff to the pedals. Which places the diff in a rather scary position. If it started spitting out fast-moving rotating bits of metal, the consequences would be eye-watering.
The most difficult bit of the whole build! That steering drag link has no good locations on any of the three parts or the frame. The upper steering linkage has a rod sticking out which they appear to want you to butt-join to the rod on the steering box. which would leave it hanging in the middle of nowhere. I think it's a consequence of re-using and combining sprues. Anyway, I cut it off and drilled out the top of the linkage to fit over the rod on the steering mechanism... much tidier.
Chassis fitted to the lower shell. Only the front suspension and wheels to fit now.
And a trial fit to get a sense of what it will look like...
Should be done tonight or tomorrow, latest, I think.
bestest,
M.

I think I'd rather have that engine behind me! Great work so far

...and this one's done!
Many thanks to my SS -- I couldn't (and wouldn't!) have done it without you...
More pics and a considered summation tomorrow.
