Dazzled's Cold War Builds

I thought I'd join in with a dedicated Cold War builds thread, particularly to focus on what I'm doing towards the 2016 SMW display.

So far it's these two:

1/350th Typhoon and Ohio class SSBNs. These will be mounted on the backboard and represent the most destructive weapons systems available at the end of the Cold War.

If anyone's coming to Bolton this Sunday I'll be bringing these along for the display table. 8-)

As I'm rapidly reaching an empasse with the 1/24th Fw190 I've decided to start something new.

I picked this up at the Bolton show last week. The idea is that, finished in NATO markings and mounted on a stand wheels up, it can be placed anywhere outside the Soviet zone as a universal space filler on our Telford display.

This is an old kit. At least it's based on an old kit. Revell's Boeing 707 dates back to 1958. Add a radar dish and some rather nice looking decals and this is the result. I know from experience that this isn't the best of kits as, some years ago, I built two of the 707s in Lufthansa markings, one each for my children to hang from their bedroom ceilings. One is still in a box in the loft.
So this is certainly a bit rough around the edges with an ample sample of flash and lots of clean up needed. However, being an old kit, it has relatively few parts and, careful building allowed for, progress can be quite rapid. This is just a few hours after start of play.

Major assembly is largely complete and the fuselage has been pencil marked for rescribing. The raised detail on the tailplane has been sanded smooth and the seams have been filled; Squadron Green on the fuselage and Mr Surfacer on the wings.

Next session will involve rescribing and sanding I believe.

Wow that's a cool idea Darryl - as soon as I saw it I thought it would look good flying over the display!

Looking forward to seeing this come together!

Excellent and a bit of a bargain at £7! No messing about with rows of windows either.....

Absolutely Shaun. although there is much messing about with rescribing and filling.

But I've had a bit of a go in the last couple of days.

Lot's of filler around the undercarriage doors. In fact the smaller main u/c doors were such a poor fit that I've just filled the voids in. I'll rescribe afterwards.

And I've started on the engines and radar dish. They're all tightly clamped to try and negate their natural tendency towards misalignment :frown:

Despite my efforts I have a feeling that I'll be revisiting these for another round.

Just have to keep telling myself "old kit" "old kit". ;-)

Fill sand fill sand fill sand fill sand...

Worth it in the end though - it'll look great when done!

Progress has been somewhat slow lately but the AWACS is definitely coming along.

As you can see the engines are all built and attached and a coat of white primer has been applied. Naturally it showed up an area that needed more filling

The radar dish is just perched on the top for the moment but this is, at least, progressing.

Nice one Darryl - that's coming along well. I've always liked the Sentry, it's a classic looking aircraft.

Great save on the E-3, I really like that aircraft and you've done a great job on the kit - it looks superb! You need to do a mainstay now!

The Mig is brilliant - you have that eastern block 'used' look down pat with that - nice one!

Cheers

As an aside - what's with the green on the inside of the burner cans - is that a standard Ruskie primer colour?
