Ritchie Blackmore, conversion from 1/16 Musketeer

To celebrate getting tickets to see the man himself in Birmingham next month I revisited a project that I did with the Airfix 54mm French line infantryman. This time I used the Mini Art 1/16 XVII Century French Musketeer. The flares were build up over the kit legs using Milliput, also the hair. The guitar body is a single piece of balsa, shaved, shaped and sanded then varnished to bring out the natural grain (I fancied the challenge! ) Quite pleased with that, actually :-D . The sleeves of the kits forearms were shaved back to bare arms and the thumb and first two fingers of the right hand were replaced with shaped balsa ones holding the plectrum aloft the way Ritchie does when 'Conducting' the other instruments before launching into a solo. I'm also rather chuffed with the facial expression as the face required quite a bit of sanding and reshaping of the chin and eyes.

Once again, I'm blown away with your figure work!
Even the Strat is a work of art on its own.

My cigarette lighter is held aloft being slowly waved from side to side

Well, it is the Spitfire of guitars! :-D
I went from being daunted by the prospect of scratching one to actually relishing the challenge of shaping that complex curved and contoured body from a single piece of balsa, then varnishing it to bring out the natural grain without any corrective filler. I'm rather chuffed with the result, although doing the tuning keys ( short lengths of wire with one end dipped into glue several times ) almost drove me nuts!

Having a real one to compare helped! :-D

Unfortunately, I sold mine about 4 or 5 years ago - 3 tone sunburst, maple neck - BIG mistake

Mine's Olympic White ( actually closer now to cream, after 35 years!.... I got it after the 'Down to Earth' tour) with white scratchplate and maple neck. My Daughters got a Daphne Blue one with rosewood neck.

Only a matter of time before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame comes knocking looking for commissioned pieces. Excellent job!

Yet another great figure conversion PT, which really captures the look and typical stance of the great man. I used to have a Fender USA Standard Stratocaster but, heretic that I am, I sold it for a Warwick bass. More heresy - guitar wise I prefer to play a Gibson Les Paul. Soz.

Great work but did you ever think of just scratchbuilding?

I got to the stage of realising that converting became more trouble than it's worth (in one I ended up just using the face and hands, the rest was Das Modelling Clay, from then on I mainly scratchbuilt).
