iggie's 'Monumental' Moth ***FINISHED***

Post by iggie »

After a lot of deliberation, I have decided on the Revell (ex Matchbox) 1/32 Tiger Moth to be my entry for this GB; not a huge amount of parts, and the resulting model is not too massive. Largely speaking the build will be OOB, although I am going to add some home-brew detailing to the engine and cockpit areas as far as I am able just to spice it up a bit.
The obligatory box, decal and sprue shots:

It's good to see you still get all the extra parts like the Canadian cockpit, floats and the mechanic swinging the prop.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

So pleased you're doing this one. It's a cracking build, apart from what seems to me to be a weird approach to the rigging. Unfortunately I never got as far as this as the Moth was a regretful 2014 binning. I sprayed it with Humbrol matt acrylic varnish after painting, Kleering, decalling and weathering and the whole plot went white. Horrendous.

I'll be watching this with interest.

My father did his basic RAF training in Calgary and flew the Canadian version. He said it kept the cold out to a certain extent. Nice choice iggie and good to see another biplane.

Cheers guys!
I'm going with the box art version, RAF colours and wheels. The crew may or may not be involved, I'm not sure yet!
No further progress to report at present; work is manic at the moment!
Best wishes

I'm not a Moth fan and I've never owned this kit - unusually for me considering the scale - but now I've seen you photos iggie I may keep an eye out for one as I never knew it came with floats as an option. Looking forward to seeing your build all the same - RAF camo looks good on any a/c IMHO!

Cheers

At last some further work; engine assembled and a little dry brushing with aluminium added. I'm going to add some pipes and leads (sort of) following some reference photos of real tiggies.
Fuselage insides have been painted and frame picked out in aluminium....again, some pipes/cables to be added

A bit more added to the engine: miscellaneous pipe and cables, plus a fuel filter (made from snipping off one of the sprue gates). Totally non-prototypical, but as I want to leave at least one engine panel open, it needs a bit of interest inside :-D

And a pilot's foot view up the fuselage with some added cables/pipes

That's looking good. Just as a matter of interest, which paint are you thinking of using for the undersurfaces? I only ask because I never seem to be able to get yellow looking right.

Now that looks a bit of a challenge, to put it mildly.

I thought I'd answered this yesterday, but clearly not
It's going to be Humbrol rattle can Trainer Yellow 24; it covers pretty well and is a nice matt yellow, not a glaring bright yellow
