Undercart on
A spot of dinner was had by the volunteers before work continued:
Then came the fitting of the newly refurbished undercarriage. Tires freshly inflated:
After being tested on a rig, raising and lowering several times, the new landing gear was deemed ready:
What's next....wait and see

Pretty much done...or am I
Painted the fuselage invasion stripes and applied the code letters and stars and bars:
The prop was finally fitted as some work was done on the engine in preparation for it to fly:
The aircraft is due to start engine tests in the next couple of days, under the watchful eye of the volunteers:

But just when it seemed it was all over. I think this mustang needs a base. If I can find my fake grass and some card.
The excitement never ends...

Wow, that was fast! I've only just got back home and I've missed all the excitement. That was a real Blitzbau!
A good choice, too; I love that Mustang kit and I like the way you've used it as a blank canvas. Have you thought about doing one for your mother-in-law?

It's not quite done yet Kevan, don't worry, I'm working on some finishing touches so you haven't missed it allKevan Bailey wrote:Wow, that was fast! I've only just got back home and I've missed all the excitement. That was a real Blitzbau!

The Mother in law idea is good, I'll remember that, haha.

Finale
I decided to knock together a bit of a diorama base to display the newly restored Mustang whilst it isn't flying.
I included some odds and ends, a spare flap from the kit, spare canopy etc made up to look damaged and obviously replaced, awaiting disposal as the Mustang prepares for it's next mission:
This was great fun and and the museum crew and I really enjoyed ourselves. The plane is an absolute dream to be honest and we only had some minor fit issues with the wings.
A great thank you to all who looked in and commented, I greatly appreciate it. I hope to take part in many more group builds on this site.
So What's next? I have a Dauntless on order, but I'll save that for another day.
That's all for now, I will post a couple of shots in the gallery.
Goodnight from all at the South East Aviation Museum

I'm sorry I missed most of your build while it was "live" Chris. That's some excellent work going on there; I really like your approach and can-do attitude (I loved your airfield and hangar in your introductory post as well).
Good show mate, look forward to seeing this one in the Completions Gallery soon!
Cheers
Al.

Excellent work the nose art is brilliant.
You must be a natural blitzer to be able to build a kit paint nose art and build a base within the allocated time slot.
I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Sorry I missed this one mate.
Nicely finished and I really like the nose art, looks like they used to paint them in action.

Excellent result, and massive brownie points as well I have no doubt! Very shrewd move....
