Black Arrows Hawk **Finished**

A Whiffery GB for any type of model. Simple decal changes, mild surgery or major. But all must have a story to back it up, no matter how silly or unbelievable.
The GB runs from 15 Sep through 16 Oct, and your host is FredK.

Black Arrows Hawk **Finished**

Post by TimJ »

During the late 1950's the Black Arrows of 111 Squadron were the premier display team of the RAF. In 1961 the Arrows were replaced by the Blue Diamonds of 92 Sqn, also flying Hunters. In addition, both 74 and 56 Sqns had their own Lightning display teams, the Tigers and Firebirds respectively. In 1964 the Red Pelicans, flying Jet Provosts took over display duties and the Yellowjacks made their first appearance flying their Gnats.

In the same year it was decided to amalgamate all the RAF display teams and to transfer the responsibility for the team from Fighter Command to the Central Flying School. After some discussion it was decided to revive the Black Arrows name for the new team and their seven black Gnats first appeared at Little Rissington on 6th May 1965. The team was later increased to nine aircraft and in 1979 the team converted onto the Hawk. Throughout their history the Arrows have thrilled and entertained airshow audiences around the globe.

For this build I'll be using the latest Airfix Hawk T.1A kit using standard Red Arrows markings on a black aircraft.

I started off with the cockpit interior, which went together well and was soon fitted into the fuselage.

There was enough room for Plasticine under the rear seat to stop it being a tail sitter.

Very quick work. It'll look good in gloss black.

Sorry about the lack of progress, I've been distracted by other builds and new arrivals. I have got some paint on it so after a few coats of Klear tomorrow the decals will be going on.

I made a start on the decalling yesterday evening.

Image

The underside 'arrow head' decal needs to be cut to fit around the wheel wells, not something I'm particularly looking forward to.

If it isn't finished before this GB is locked it will appear in my Workbench Window.

Try putting the wheel doors on closed, using blutac to hold them.
Apply the decal over all, when dry, trim with a sharp scalpel.
