That's today's progress. I have to go back and touch up the tail code, nicked it with the tweezers picking it up out of the water. It's just another one of those days with this build.

In my eyes, it is difficult to beat that classic USN/USMC gull grey over white with full-on loud and proud markings. This is really looking excellent, Greg.

Moving along to the port side. Now I'm just having fun, stencil city from the 30 plus year old Monogram sheet. Believe it or not they are behaving nicely. Just as well be decals, as everything else about this build has been an exercise in frustration.




After the painting debacle, I have now lost one of the main gear retraction struts....... Both my wife (sweetest woman in the world) and myself crawled around for an hour looking for it. Gone..... Zip...... Nada!!
I may try to fabricate something resembling it's mate or throw the other one out an go with that.

This build has been haunted I tell you ......HAUNTED!


Edit: The errant retraction strut has been found! Stuck to a piece of tape in the box lid where I'd been spraying the u/c doors. Rest easy crisis is averted.

There's always one build that turns out to be the work of the devil each year I find; hopefully this will be yours and the remainder of the year will go smoothly build-wise!

That said, you're making a great job of this!

Thanks iggie, I did better on the Lightning, only a week out of the hospital after cutting off a finger. I guess this one is my payback. Oh well, onward and upward!!

OK - not the correct model of F4 (I flew the F4M) but, heck, it is a Phantom. That is shaping up really rather well - good effort 'fingers'. :-)

She is turning out very nicely. Really like the short nosed Phantom. The decals are making it pop. Nice work Greg.

I can't say enough good things about the Kits World decals and Furball decals sheets. They are thin tough and lay down like a second skin. They are really a pleasure to work with.
For the stencils I'm using the 30 some year old Monogram sheet that came with the kit. I dont trust them to adhere very well given their age, so as I take each one from the backing paper I dip it in Future and then apply it to the model. I then wick off the excess Future and let it settle. I hope this process will keep them from falling off.

When I say Future I really mean whatever it's new name is. Kleer to you fellas across the pond. The bottle I have is 10 years old and I still say Future. I will eventually get accustomed to it new name when iI have to go and buy a new bottle.

Nothing has gone on at the bench this weekend. Me and the Mrs. have been having our 4 yr old grandson stay over. Lots of bug searching and playing ball toss. more to come as the week progresses.

I appreciate the perseverance on the Phantom! It will be worth every second of work.

That F-4 just gets better. Old decals can work surprisingly well and those Monogram stencils look fine from here. Personally, I never got on very well with Kleer but I know plenty swear by it. If I recall correctly, "they" (Johnsons?) changed the formula and some enthusiasts are now less enthusiastic about it.
