Fascinating stuff LM. Sorry to hear you have had distractions slowing down progress, but what you have done is looking great. 8-) I used to do a lot of marquetry stuff (decorative boxes mostly) at one time, so I feel your pain at cutting thin sheets of wood into odd shapes. Pine has a nasty tendency to split when the cutting angle gets close to the grain. The best trick I found was to clamp the veneer down tightly against the work surface before attempting any knife cutting.

No problem with the late reply re. the Oakington Aeroplane. The local enthusiasts did manage to get a partial replica built some years ago but as I said their website seems to be down now. Last I heard was they were trying to get it re-engined to see if it would fly - I guess interest and/or money ran out. A shame, but not that surprising.

In fact it was a dig at W. H. Smith, (of the chain store fame), who started as an office tea boy and rose to be the First Lord of the Admiralty (a political post). Obviously Sullivan did not approve...!

A lesson on warships and musical scores. I always feel much more cultured after I spend time around you Brits :)

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go do something American; like shoot a gun at a hamburger, or cry at the fact that I only have crappy health insurance and only 3 weeks of paid leave, after 22 years into my career :-D :-D   :) :-| :frown:

As the saying goes, you can never have too many Spitfires oops, every day is a school day around here!
Fascinating stuff, and the decking looks good too
Best wishes

SS and Iggie: the fact that I am a retired teacher might have something to do with the "lessons" in my posts - but I did not teach history or music!

Can we guess what you taught?

I'm going to assume drafting and engineering of some kind?

Very nice planking on the deck. Interesting too see what the gun looks like once it´s emplaced onto the barbette.

Bingo!
Lucky guess! I still remember my geography teacher (a big man) picking up a boy with one hand and shaking him for misbehaving in class. Ahh, happy days. (Mostly he was a nice guy tbh but he didn't tolerate idiots.)

LM,
all the accolades have been made, there is nothing more I can add - fantastic work and great lessons in naval architecture.

As an aside, my paternal grandfather was a Royal Marine gunner on a ‘Cressy Class’ armoured cruiser (HMS Hogue) prior to the start of WW1.

That deck section looks fantastic, LM and what a fascinating bit of history regarding the use of wood as a deck material. I got an "A" in my Geography O-Level back in the late '70's you know and my old (and he is pretty old by now as I'm 62) Geography teacher lives just around the corner.

My old geography teacher (actually 'master' 😉) always wore a tweed sports coat, with the mandatory leather elbow patches and we learnt that it was possible to get any lesson into the subject of oxbow lakes if we asked the right questions...😃
Best wishes
