Re: VTOL SB - 10th December 2017 - 10th December 2018

I believe this question in true place.
I'm looking for any photos or info about AV-8(NA) (Night Attack Harrier) in early style camo (green / dark grey) on the LHD, LHP ship deck. Perhaps this camo was use before 1993.
Anybody help? Perhaps photos from book or magazine. Google keep silence.

I think the camo scheme was around in pictures I've seen of Gulf War Harriers in 1991, I'll see what my Harrier books say.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!! :lol:

Hi Novo. I've looked through a few books and all of the NA version of the Harrier seem to be in the grey or two grey scheme, the camo ones appear to be the original AV-8B. I also found a test Harrier NA from 1989 so I think that might be when they started arriving or being developed. I'll check some more books but I don't think the Night Attack version was in green/grey. :grin:

Hi Marky!
They was:
VMA-211

VMA-214

But no one photos NA Harrier in this camo on ship.
On May 28, 1992, a detachment from VMA-211 embarked on the first AV-8B Night Attack deployment overseas. Aboard the USS Tarawa, Det A consisted of 6 Night Attack Harriers, 9 pilots, and a crew of enlisted personnel. VMA-211 Det A was also the first to land AV-8B Night attack Aircraft aboard an LPD, the USS Ogden.

And during this cruise, camouflage was grey (lov vis) https://www.navysite.de/cruisebooks/lha ... ex_006.htm;
VMA-214 became the first squadron to introduce the Night Attack capability into the UDP in October of 1991 by deploying 20 Night Attack Harriers to MCAS Iwakuni for seven months. http://www.seaforces.org/usmcair/VMA/VMA-214.htm;
Still one question: how Night Attack Av-8B was delivered to Iwakuni in October 1991? Pacific overflight together with tanker? (KC-10A for example). Or on LDP/LHP or other ship?
:roll:
Entire history of finding photos green Night Attack Harrier, similar to the search for photographs of IJN aircraft on aircraft carriers. It seems that Internet, flickr, instagram and others, a little late appears. ;-)

Oh good, glad you found some pictures. Perhaps this was just before the grey or two grey era but at least you have the pics you wanted. As far as the transfer to Iwakuni, I'd say carrier or C-5 Galaxy perhaps?. They could use refuelling probes as well so it's not clear. :lol:

Regardless of how many there were or when that trey green camo is by for the best looking American Harrier by far, this one is for me as good:

Paint work is underway, this will be the first time I've attempted a 2 tone trey scheme, took a hell of alot of masking but it ended well I think:

I really enjoy building Harriers so I think for the moment this is the way forward.

Tonight with it being build night on a very popular YouTube channel me and the Mrs spent some quality time at the bench.
Sal's doing really well on her first practice model!
After the last bit of filling and sanding and painting the landing gear I think she's almost at the decalling stage already!
With the Telic GR7 I added the intakes and upon test fitting I knew there'd be trouble with the fit.
I used some thinned down Squadron White Putty and then went at it with a cotton bud and nail polish remover.
I'm quite pleased with how its worked and if things don't change then tomorrow I'll be touching up the paint work ready for the decals.

Finally got the paint work finished!
Also put the nozzles on, masked and PVA'd the canopy:

Once I'd done that I airbrushed the under wing pylons, refueling probe(taken from the new GR7/9 kit and gear doors, note that while I was doing these I sprayed ZD464's 2 Pylons that I'm building for the RAF100 GB.

Well I got the Pylons, landing gear, gear doors, refueling probe, extended air brake and out riggers on and painted the 2 bumps under the nose last night but I was having alot of trouble getting all the landing gear to touch the floor so I slept on it and this morning I came up with a solution and now they all touch so all is well at 4am?!?!
I'll upload a photo later!

Just a taster, the refueling probe(taken from the Airfix New Tool GR.7/9 that would itherwise not be used) went on before the rest, the clamps we're used to bend it into shape:
