It's not in my area of focus but should we be considering one?

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Concur. But that's a long, long, long way ahead into the future.

Re: D-Day 75th anniversary GB next summer?
We did the 70th in 2014, so the spacing is about right.
The 2014 GB shows pretty good variety and participation.
This is one we should give folks some lead time to come up with something; might be OK to solicit interest and potential length/dates to put on the draft calendar.

I kind of like the idea of concluding the GB on June 6th itself. Seems in keeping with everything leading up to the big day!

and if you're doing an airyplane you've got to put the stripes on only on the 5th of June; masking is optional but a big brush is a requirement.iggie wrote:Me too; it seems more fitting to medwomby wrote:I kind of like the idea of concluding the GB on June 6th itself. Re: D-Day 75th anniversary GB next summer?
It would be instructive to read the GB Chat post to see how/why it was structured -- http://www.uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... 9&start=15;
and the Sign-Up and Chat of the GB itself -- http://www.uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=275&t=9553;
The 2014 GB allowed for D-Day participants only, where D-Day is by definition 6 June. This did include some 5 June activity. It was not a general invasion/battle of Europe GB. It started on 6 June for that reason.
It would behoove us define the purpose and scope of the 2019 GB early on. While there is only one D-DAY (6 June) that may be too restrictive a second time around, although that does fit with the sentiments expressed about concluding the GB on the 6th.
An option might be to include all units, equipment, etc, up to 24 July. That is the US Army's date range for the Battle of Normandy and on the 26th (I think) the Breakout & Pursuit (Operation Cobra) phase started. A start o/a 6 June running 6(ish) weeks would take us to 24 July.
My personal opinion is that D-Day is so significant that it deserves its own GB.

I agree completely. This D day anniversary should be commemorated. It was the beginning of the end of what was probably the worst war in human history.
I will be in on this with something with a family connection.
All the best.
Greg.

Agreed we should do something to commemorate this. Although it is not my usual area I'd be up for it.Gregers wrote:I agree completely. This D day anniversary should be commemorated.

Re: D-Day 75th anniversary GB next summer?
I'm just bumping this thread to the top of the pile, as this is a significant anniversary of one of the most important campaigns of WWII and should (I feel) be commemorated accordingly.
Having read back through the previous contributions, I thing we need to firm up dates and parameters and, of course contributors!
For my part, I favour a start of 6th June and a running time of 8 weeks.
As far as eligible builds, anything that can be demonstrated to have been involved in D-Day on land, sea or in the air
I'm in!
