Re: Andy Dighton's workbench

I've started to paint the Beaufighter. I bought a brand new bottle of Humbrol 123 Extra Dark Sea Grey. The shade is nowhere near what it's supposed to be. I had a bottle of Xtracrylic Extra Dark Sea Grey and painted right hand tail plane (the rest of the aircraft is painted with Humbrol).

I think that shade is a bit out, Andy. As I'm colour blind I don't normally become involved in issues of shade for obvious reasons but even I can tell that left hand tailplane is not what I would expect EDSG to look like. I went off modern Humbrol paints a while ago as I find the covering power to be pants and some take an age to fully harden off (I airbrush the main paint on models and use brushes for detail work), but I have kept the faith with their varnishes.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to phase out the Humbrol paints and I'm going try the Hataka paints a try. They seem to have good reviews.
Progress has been slow with the Beaufighter and the Hurricane. I seem to be suffering a major loss of mojo, so I decided to keep the padlock on the shed for a few days. Both are nearing completion.

That is a shame about the paints: I have some original camouflage colours whuch are still useable, but I did find that the newer paints were not so good when I restarted modelling about a decade ago. Since then they have improved in my experience, but it seems that they may be on a downward slope again.

The Beau and Hurri look good. Hope the mojo comes back shortly.

Just catching up on your last few pages Andy: very nice job on the pink Spitfire, and the Beau and Hurricane are looking equally fine.
Best wishes

I do like that Beaufighter. Good to see the mojo has returned Andy.

Thanks Ben. Although I wouldn't say that the mojo is back yet.

I hope the mojo comes back fully, Andy as you turn out some great models, the Hurricane and Beaufighter here being two such.

Thanks for kind words Shaun. In fact I had an enjoyable day at the bench yesterday. I managed to get this far into a Revell Spitfire Vb for my BBMF collection.

These turned up in the post on Friday. I'm impressed with them so far.

Both the Hurricane and the Beau, and the Spitfire are looking good Andy.

I really like Hataka paints, I have a drawer full of their paint sets.

Nice work on the Beaufighter.

I think you'll find the Hataka blue line a joy to work with. I believe blue are formated for airbrushing, and are very nicely thinned.

NB. They do benefit very much from a good primer!

Good to see you're enjoying the modelling again - even if it took a Spitfire to perk you up! :ha:
