Replying to posts on my mobile devices.

Post by Markh_75 »

Hi guys when I’m on my iPhone or iPad replying to posts I keep getting problems, my posts (5 times out of 10), keep getting post failure notices, is there something I need to know when replying on my phone? Some of the replies were a bit longer than a standard reply and to find that they were a waste of time in the end is getting annoying. Next time I get the problem I’ll record what it says.

Anyone else getting this problem?

I think i may have found out what was wrong, why i was getting so many error notices!
My iPhone was logging me in from the keychain and while i did get access, it required me to log on (on my iPhone) manually. On the keychain method i kept getting messages to choose my wifi source, every time i visited and when i wanted to reply, this was quite annoying as it interrupted my selection and connection. I keep a record of all my log in info for all the online sites i visit, so it came in handy to log me in manually.
Should be okay now. :)

Okay, i thought i'd perhaps sorted the issue out but lo' and behold (or 'below and hold'), i got one this morning; anyone else getting this kind of error message on mobile devices?

J.Ratz i've pm'd a copy of this to you for analysis.

" in case this is unclear in the picture, the code is (mysql4) incorrect string value ''\xF0\x9F\x98\x81. column post text at row 1 [1366] ".

Hopefully we can solve this together, bestest, Markh. :-D

I've PM'd a response asking about general browser set up. Looking at the error though these are code for extended ASCII characters ie those letters with umlauts and inflections etcs.

Are you using a non-UK/US keyboard configuration on your phone or are you specifically added such characters to your posts? The board software should handle it but it is starting point. \x81 is a non printable character though!

I get that (or something similar) if I use any 'on phone' emotions. Using the provided emotions (at left using the full editor) causes no problems
Best wishes

Yes we determined it was the use of emojis instead of forum smilies.

Emojis are actual Unicode characters ie there is a number for each emoji in the same way the is a number that represents every letter of the alphabet (upper and lowercase). Smilies predate emojis and use standard characters (when Unicode wasn't well support) to represent little faces eg

Code: Select all

:D ;-) 8-(
as these became the norm, forums and started to render them as little images. Then with mobile phone came emojis. Personally I don't find them all that useful as you can't do this

:pilot:

or this

or best of all

Check the full editor on the non mobile view of the website to see what smilies are available. You can always include smilies from elsewhere as Iggie has done using postimage
