Gunze Sangyo 1/350 Lusitania
Re: Gunze Sangyo 1/350 Lusitania
Thanks again. I made four batches of 5 Minute epoxy but didn't mix the components together at once. I would mix one batch, get a funnel straight and wait for it to harden. I did that three more times and they all stand straight now. The funnels really only make contact with their platforms at the front and back so that's where the epoxy was applied. No sense in slathering the whole bottom of the funnel with it, I think it would just look messy.
The instructions also tell you to twist all the funnel rigging up into a knot, glue it and then stick the whole thing back inside the funnel when the glue dries. Each funnel has quite a bit of separate lines going into it and I didn't trust that following the directions wouldn't allow slack to develop on some of the lines. I pulled each side out of the top and used extra thin CA to glue them to the inside of the funnel. Now I will relieve the bottom of the funnel caps which aren't visible to compensate for the bit of space the CA and lines take up so the caps will fit. There isn't any glue or rigging at the front and back of the funnel interior so I'm just filing the sides of the cap bottoms where the interference is and using the untouched front and back to locate the caps. Hard to explain but that's my plan!

These precut railings are really giving me a hard time on this model. In hindsight I think I would have been better off using generic railings and cutting them myself as I usually do instead of trying to make all these fit.
The wood decks and some warped parts aren't helping the fit either. The front wheelhouse was the worst so far. Not my best job of getting this one together. You only get one of each so if you mess it up you have to live with it. I'm gonna live with it lol!

Your idea of imperfections in a build and mine are very far apart, Chris, as this continues to look brilliant to me. I won't show you what an imperfection on one of my models looks like

Thanks ShaunW. I guess I'm always working on them with a magnifying visor on so all the little mistakes look huge. It will look good sitting in a case on a shelf. With every model I do I think I learn what not to do on the next one! The camera also makes them stand out to me. It's sort of like getting a small scratch on a new car. People won't notice it but my eye always goes to it because I know it's there. I'm probably OCD or something lol.
The other thing I need to stop doing is looking at these really perfect models I sometimes use for reference. Some of the people building these things are true artists.

That old ship adds some character -- masts with ratlines and rigging, other details -- and you are doing a great job with it all.

You make it look far too easy
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Impressive work indeed
I know what you mean about the pre-cut railings versus stock lengths; I tend to cut the pre-sized ones into individual lengths especially when the manufacturer expects you to fold them around seventeen 90 and 45 degree corners and get them to meet up again!

Masterful. The rigging has really enhanced what is already a beautiful build.

Thank you Shaun. I think it will be complete by tonight or tomorrow.
