Australian Bicentennial Airshow, RAAF Richmond, 1988

Post by PaulBradley »

1988 was the Australian Bicentennial, and I spent 4 months in the middle of the year backpacking around the eastern half of the country, culminating with a multi-day visit to the Bicentennial Airshow in October. This was held at RAAF Richmond, west of Sydney, and was probably the biggest airshow held in Australia to that point. I spent, I think, 4 days there and took hundreds of photos. Not always of the best quality, because I could only afford cheap film, here are some of my favourites:

Soviet An-124. Somewhere, I have a photo of me on the flight deck - the guy I was with blagged his way onboard and I got to tag along!

One of many DC-3/C-47s at the show!

The F-111 was still in Aussie service, and the highlight of their flying display was the fuel dump and burn! Very cool!!

Th e Mirage IIIO was also still in service (just) and this is the ARDU one.

The RNZAF sent their flying display team equipped with A-4 Skyhawks.

The RAAF Roulettes were still flying the MB.326

A flying Ventura - very neat!

This is just a small portion of the many types taking part - the size and scope of the show was equivalent to RIAT. The static display was huge, the flying display lasted for hours each day, and there was international participation from around the World. It was a pretty amazing experience all in all!

Wonderful memories, Paul!
This has jogged my memory - somewhere I have the photos.
There was a camouflaged BAe 146 doing the sales pitch there, right? Plus a Nimrod, USAF F-15s etc.

Love that Nimrod model. I hope I can get around to mine one day.
I had forgotten the RAF Tristar!
