The tailplanes have been fitted temporarily. They need a little sanding to get the planform right but I am pleased with the end result:

Major surgery:

The cut needs to be on the raised panel line. I cut a little to the rear and file the excess, check fitting the new tail piece.

The new parts look really good, and certainly a huge improvement on the originals! Are you going to scribe panel lines into the tailplanes?
Best wishes

Jim,
I don’t do ‘scribing’ so no. However fine a line scribed on a 1:72 aircraft might be, it will still translate to a furrow in full scale.

I cut out the throttle quadrant supplied in 5 parts on the Airwaves etched set - took one look at the tiny pieces and sat down at the PC and in less time than it took to try and cyno the Airwaves parts together, to my fingers, to the work mat - I designed a printable version. Whilst the prints worked well, I realised that the ‘throttle’ section was far too small, so a quick adjustment to the CAD and a re-print.

Today I’ve been getting the cockpit prepared. The side panels have been added, the pilots instrument panel added to the plastic version. The radar/GEE display for the Nav has been painted and is ready to be fitted and the ejection seats are awaiting their straps (I’ll not be fitting them until much later in the build).
The recessed part of the airbrakes have been prepared in the upper fuselage and, finally, the ‘new’ throttle quadrants are ready - photos in a little while. I did think about designing a better control column - but a black control column in a black cockpit …… the kit product is good enough.

Printing new parts to replace PE sounds like a very good idea to me!

Excellent progress on the rear end. I also agree with you about scribing and representation of panel lines generally on aeroplanes.

Here are some photos of todays work:

The cockpit with side panels, instrument panel, radar/GEE console and control column:

The throttle quadrant and the initial straps for the seats,

The reheat petals and turbines

(These are buried inside the rear end so no more likely to be seen than the compressors!).

The ejection seats have straps, I do need to punch out a disk to represent a QRB for the parachute harnesses.
The black throttle quadrant is lost in the black cockpit, but you might be able to make it out.

Image

The glossy look of the seats is PVA, I’ll apply some matt varnish tomorrow .

I have added some ‘Little-lenses’ to the main U/C landing legs.

Today I am hoping to complete the fitting of the bottom wing/fuselage airbrakes, paint the insides of the intake ducts and drill out the gun barrels for brass replacements along with the pitot tube bases.
With those completed, I might be able to button up the fuselage halves - I do also need to attach the outer wing sections to their respective inner sections to try and achieve a smoother join.

I am in the process of fitting the outer wing sections. If any of you have built the Javelin, you may be aware of the ‘step’ between the inner and outer sections - requiring filling and sanding. I have decided to take a leaf from the recommended construction of the ‘old Vulcan kit’ and glue the sections together before adding the upper and lower halves. By doing this, it is possible the press the inner wing section down such that it matches the outer.
I am attempting the first go with the under surface (although it is a better fit anyway).
I am using Revell Contacta but will add some cyno.

Image

All the airbrake voids are ready to receive the 3D parts, which I will do once the outer wing sections are secure.

The intakes are slightly undersize, with the actual intake orifices being 26” wich equals 9.17mm where the kit intakes are 8.55mm so that will need to be addressed when the fuselage is together.

Really impressive work Tony, I do like those replacement tailplanes and your seats look excellent. I do like your new rear fuselage although I'd be a bit nervous about cutting out the old section due to it being joined to the wings - it seemed to go well though.
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...
