I do like your new rear fuselage although I'd be a bit nervous about cutting out the old section due to it being joined to the wings - it seemed to go well though.
The thing about the cut along the wings is that they have to have the taper reduced anyway so there is quite a bit of freedom for error.

That's a good point actually.

The mismatch between the inner and outer wing profiles - leading to the need for filling and sanding is partly due to the ends of the inner wing profiles having an almost imperceptible curve increasing the section! I shall have a go at making it ‘flat’ when compared to the main section.

One advantage of this build is that I can see how my printed parts actually ‘fit’ the kit from a builders perspective - sounds a bit illogical, but when parts such as the seamless intake ducts were originally designed, they were copied from the kit parts. In fitting ‘my’ parts during this build I seen ways of helping the builder. For instance: by adding a fine reference line along the outer side of the intake duct - it can be used to ensure the duct is level - and a notch at the back helps the alignment of the compressor faces. These items are being test printed right now.

No build progress today - sorry.
The alternative print parts have come out well enough but I’ve done a little extra modifying of the compressor faces - both the S6 and S7 versions.
Out this evening so progress may continue tomorrow.[

Hi Tony,

First post here, just been doing a deep dive on research into converting my mk1 Hurricane to the metal wing version and came across your build (love it). Do you have a source for the alley cat conversion still? I am really struggling with tracking this down!

Really enjoying your 3D printing work Tony. Are you self-taught? Did you have some CAD background talent/education before?

Totally self taught, 2 years ago I had no idea how to even begin and as for any previous experience - no, there isn’t much call for it in the cockpit of a jet trainer doing 7 miles/min at 250 ft! Lol.

Excellent progress on talent then. Also gives me hope as well. My past experience was a lot slower. About 4 miles a minute at 500 feet in the CT-114 Tutor.

This morning the intake trunking interiors have received a coat of satin white. I have used the revised trunking with a reference line on the side (to help with horizontal alignment - photos will follow) but my original starter bullet/compressor faces. The slight lip, I think I mentioned, on the section of wing which connects with the outer wing has been filed back with the port requiring rather more sanding than the starboard. A test fit suggests that this fixes about 90% of the ‘fit error’ (fill and file/sand) at the join.
Just at the moment the starboard outer wing section is attached and drying.

The silver disc is one of 2 magnets keeping the outboard wing section flat. Once again, I’ve used Revell Contacta - so an extended drying time.

I am now considering designing my own Firestreak missiles as 3D printing can produce some very fine ‘wings’.

I found a second piece of plate glass so the upper fuselage is now held in a similar fashion whilst the outer wing section is secured in place.

This is about 15 mins work. The basic design work has been completed, I need to add the various external ducts, the fuse windows and the pylon connection point. Not sure how I am going to represent the faceted glass nose just yet.

I took dimensional notes from the Firestreak at Newark Air Museum.

The 4 external ducts have been added along with the bands where the fuse windows are positioned - I want to see if these are too prominent.
I’ve added the seeker head and will print both to see how they look.

If these work out, I’ll have a never ending supply of Firestreak missiles!

The estimated time for printing the supported missiles was 2hrs 35mins according to the slicing software - that would translate to about 3 hrs in the printer, so I didn’t have time to set things going unfortunately.

With the outer wing sections joins hardening that is it for this week. Construction will continue on Monday - who knows, the model might shape up to looking like a Javelin next week!???

Very interesting project, Tony and you are certainly something of a dab hand with this 3D malarkey!
