Are modifications allowed, like, swapping ugly propellers, canopies, etc, with better looking replacements from other kits?

As long as it is only limited to that sort of minor change, the changes you would make to any kit today to fit your collection then it is OK.

Thank you for the quick answer, thats good to know. I´m about to choose a kit, but I wont say, which one, yet

Back then things such as bombs bore little resemblance to reality and although the kit itself will look OK today these details would spoil the effect.

I consider doing the Revell Ki-43-I - the wheels can be taken for lifebuoys, but not as wheels! So I´ll replace those.
I still hesitate to commit to this GB, after my record of DNFs this year...

As they say about the lottery - you've got to be in it to win it.....

I have an impressive record of DNFs over the years, but I also push myself to build some of these kits that might not otherwise get built.

Good point!
One reason why I do modelling: I want to teach myself, how to go beyond my comfort zones! One of my vices I dislike most, is the habit of not bringing things I started, to an end ;-)
So, whenever a DNF happens, my inner pig dog says: "See! I told you so!"
It makes me mad, when he conquers me.
