US 82nd Airborne

Post by RCD »

I took out a group of Ramblers out around the Quorn area today. We came across this stone in remberance in the local park. Something to think about as we head towards the 11th November.

There is also Wollaton Hall in Nottingham near by where American parachutists were based prior to D-Day.

There's also a memorial IIRC in Braunstone Park Leicester. Where Scudamore road is was the satellite airfield for RAF Desford. It was a training station but I've heard stories that Dakotas flew out of there. The Officers Mess is next to the M1 where Samworth Bros have their sandwich factory. Just a few 100M's north of Leicester Forest East services on the M1. The whole area was used by the US airborne at the time and the main airfield used at Leicester was RAF Leicester East which is now Leicester Airport.
It's only pain, work through it.
