Revell 1/72 Heinkel He219 UHU

Another oldie that turned out ok eventually.
There is hardly any cockpit detail and no rear bulkhead so this had to be scratched with plasticard as did the side consoles in the front of the cockpit.
A coaming also had to be made as it is on the real aircraft but omitted from this kit and it's absence is quite noticeable.
I used the reverse camo method by spraying the model with RLM 75 first and then placing little blobs of blutak all over the airframe and then squirting the RLM 76 over the top of these blutak blobs. Once the blutak was removed I misted a thin layer of RLM 76 all over the airframe to tone down the blotches a little.
I used Tamiya Nato Black for the under surfaces.

I have taken some pictures of the reverse camo in progress, so if anyone is interested in seeing them then let me know and maybe I could put some up in the tips section.

Again, I have to admire your skills in creating a silk purse! And those are a LOT of blu tack blobs…;-)

It would be interesting to get an idea about your motivation in spending so much skilful work on a kit that is really a sow's ear, instead of on a contemporay kit where your artistry would pay off even more?

Best,

Joachim

Good looking model of a Classic kit. For many years the Frog and
Revell kits were the the only ones availible. Lyell...

This particular kit only cost me a fiver and so became a candidate for a test bed for practising the spot camo, and as we all know this is not the best 219 kit out there.
I like to try new techniques first on lesser kits before I try it on something more expensive as I don't feel so bad having to redo the work again if it goes wrong, plus forewarned is forearmed as they say and in this particular case it has helped me so that the next time I try this method I will be able to get the job done quicker now I know what I have to do.;-)
I have managed to transfer a similar method over to other projects like the squiggle camo I did on an Me262b1 and Do335 recently so without doing the spot camo this way first I would have not been able to attempt the squiggle camo on these models. :)

BTW Julian and I found an old Revell boxing (at least it was pre grey boxes) of the UHU at Telford. Not having seen the original Revell version we had a look inside and were surprised to find the Frog one. Now I know the recent Revell re-release was actually the Frog tool, but did they really box this back in the late 70's, early 80's or had someone put the Frog sprues in the this old box?

To determine if you have the Frog or Revell HE219 is simple. On
the Revell kit the fuselage is molded upper and lower halves. The
Frog kit the fuselage halves are molded left and right. Lyell

Joachim,

Not my place to answer, clearly, but that's never stopped me before.

Anyone can get a good result out of a well-designed contemporary kit; it takes a real modeller to get a result out of a "sow's ear" :-D

And yes, my tongue is lodged firmly in my cheek!

Martin
