Re: Why do you have a Stash?
I like Stuff.
Also, as others pointed out, kits come and go. I buy the ones I'm after when they are available. Anyone who builds particular themes must surely do the same?
My stash size is well within the achievable. I am aiming to build around 20 kits per year consistently (at 18 for 2022 currently) so I have 10-15 years' worth there.

Re: Why do you have a Stash?
My wife states that “the stash” is part and parcel of the Model Building hobby. Kinda of a hobby within the hobby I guess.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

Because I lack adequate self control and have overly optimistic expectations

My wife is a knitter, and has a stash of yarn. So it's not just us.

Consider this; My no.1 son has a 'stash' of cars
1:1 scale
At last count he has about 40. His latest addition is a 1984 Camaro
9 out 10 of his cars are for rebuilding, most are in bits, incomplete
Its kinda like having part-started kits and needing a/m parts to complete them

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

I wish, that I knew what was doing!
Re: Why do you have a Stash?
I have about 500 or so kits. I haven't counted them it's just an estimate. It has been accumulated over about 30 years. So not an instant kind of thing. I used to build a lot more than I have been, I started playing guitar again about 5 years ago.
Anyway, I have some kits and subjects that are no longer readily available or at least at cheap prices. I did go a little crazy with some things like the idea of having dozens of the same subject (albeit sometimes in different marks) so I could do different colour schemes, squadrons etc. I also went through a thing of wanting to do better builds of kits I had already made.
It was also a bit of therapy in the sense of hunting some of the subjects and kits down online etc. A case of "I wonder if I can find X kit of X subject".
I have sold some over the years, sometimes at a much higher price than what I paid for them. I have slowly started building again and do enjoy it when I am at it.
I recently tidied my garage where I build and I take a lot of pride and joy in how it looks more like a hobby shop than some hobby shops. By the way I remain a mediocre modeler!

Re: Why do you have a Stash?
I just buy kits while I can. There will be a point when I can no longer afford to buy them and I'm pretty sure I'll be building them till the day I pop me clogs.
And I have a theory that goes something like this. I wont die until I build my last model, so if I keep buying them I wont die 'cos I've always got something waiting to be built.
Cheers Howtoliveforever

Nice theory. Let us know how it goes in practice.
