Greek 1910 cruiser Georgios Averof

Post by MDT »

I was completely unaware of this fantastic WWI cruiser until I flew over it on the way to Athens Airport. A fantastic effort has been made to preserve this warship still owned by the Hellenic Navy. The entrance fee is a mere 3 Euros and definitely worth it.

Apart from a number of politicians I can think of, that has got to be one of the biggest spanners ever!

Lovely pictures though, and great to see such a well maintained part of their naval heritage 👍
Best wishes

Jim

I’m really surprised at the lack of promotion in Athens for this fantastic museum ship. On seeing it from a 737 on the way into Athens I had to Google it to find out what I’d seen.
Indeed the incredibly large spanner deserved a picture! Not exactly sure what it was for.
It’s a shame there aren’t more ships like this as it really gave a deep impression of what it was like for those who served on this era of warships.
