GJ's Hobby & Crafts - Anyone know this store?

Recommendations of all those increasingly rare LMS's in a town near you, so the rest of us can find them and marvel! Also, the places near you where blokes approach you, furtively clutching the latest SAMI and smelling of resin.

GJ's Hobby & Crafts - Anyone know this store?

Post by iggie »

I recently built an Airfix SA330 Puma, which contained leaflets indicating that it had been sold from new in the USA even though the box art didn't give have any marking such as Airfix USA etc.
While cleaning the area around my bench just now I found this little till receipt which I think may have fallen out of the box...
It gives a name of G J's Hobby & Crafts and a sale date of 07.09.82. Unfortunately, this date does not give a clue to the date format being used so if itself does not suggest a US origin but the receipt appears to show a sales tax at 7% which has never been a VAT rate here in the UK.
Does anyone have any idea where this store/shop may have been?

A quick Google search showed a now defunct G Js hobby and craft in Endicott NY.

That's what I found, but the entries I found were for J G's Hobbys rather than Hobby and Crafts... but that might not mean too much!

Yeah, I'd thought that myself. Unfortunately nothing else showing up.
If it was the right place, based on the two addresses listed, it was in one or both of these locations:

It would be nice to track it down for definite.

A bit of further research and I don't think this was the place you're looking for. Seemed it was an RC model shop.
Ah well, it was fun looking it up. (How sad am I?)

Just because it was LATER termed GJ's Hobbies, and doesn't state Crafts, doesn't mean that it didn't sell crafts stuff in the past, and just because it ended as an RC shop doesn't preclude it from having sold model kits, either then or in the past.

I created a post on the UIPMS/USA forums in the hope of an answer, but don't hold your breath as is a rather moribund place...

Thanks Paddy and Paul 😄
It would be fun to know where the kit was sold, even more fun to find out how on earth it came to be back in the UK and sold on ebay!

Thank Andrew, that certainly looks to be the business. I'm guessing that the address given has either been developed or was a registered office.
