Kon Tiki

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

Kon Tiki

Post by AlanW »

Two apologies to begin with. One - this model contains no plastic. Two - I forgot to hoover the floor before photographing.

This is my rendition of the Kon Tiki, a boat that has fascinated me since my childhood. I had built her previously from a commercial kit but the dimensions were way out. It seems strange but if I can visit her in Oslo then I assume a kit manufacturer can also do the same. Anyway, here is a more accurate representation scratchbuilt from balsa, scrap wood, string, an old shower curtain, and cardboard, with a couple of personalised decorative touches on the cabin thrown in.

Does she sail? Yes, with four dagger boards at the stern and two at the prow - something, I seem to remember, Thor Heyerdahl didn’t factor into his original boat design which resulted in him more drifting along on the prevailing currents rather than actually sailing. Still, all credit to him and his crew. Thanks again for looking.

Wonderful job. Looks like it should be in a museum display.

Excellent work Alan!
I have a first edition book of the expedition around the house somewhere, and loved reading it as a child; a fascinating tale from start to finish. Your model looks spot on from the photographs that I recall 👍
Best wishes

Wonderful craftsmanship. I vaguely remember watching the documentaries about the Kon Tiki Man as a child.

I “remember” this from way-back, I think have several books on the voyage.

I well remember reading about this expedition and seeing the documentary in my (much) younger days and this is a truly excellent scratch build of the Kon Tiki. Heyerdahl and his crew certainly had no lack of cajones to sail across the Pacific on that thing!

Magnificent work! You should put her in a case to protect your awesome build... I wonder how many visitors to your house would recognize this iconic craft? Anyway, beautiful job!
