P-51D Mustang - Airfix 1974

Post by gengriz »

This one has sat on my desk, taunting me since Telford in 2022. It cost all of £5, which is definitely a bargain.

My memory told me that I enjoyed building the "new" Airfix Mustang back in 1974, so I was keen to see if it lived up to my perception. It did.

Good fit, finely engraved panel lines, credible interior (including side-wall detail) and a generally fun build. I lowered the flaps with some quick cuts and scores, I suspect the canopy is a little less bulged than it should be, but otherwise this was a fun build!

Decals are those supplied with the kit, for 352 Fighter Group, US Army Air Forces (aircraft of Major G E Preddy) based at RAF Bodney in Norfolk, during 1944. The decals are a bit yellowed, but I'm sure they will clear now it is on display in the daylight!

Decals don’t look too yellowed despite the age. Nice work.

That kit certainly takes me back and that is a great build of it. Funnily enough I watched a short history documentary about Major Preddy on YouTube only a couple of nights ago.
