Re: CAG's Revell \ Monogram Black Widow
A small update - wherein I prove the value of not assuming anything, no matter how strange....
I have been working, but if you recall right at the start, I did say I was in the middle of moving house..... damn don't you hate the way life gets in the way of modelling??
She's now all decaled and stenciled...... BUT
While waiting for the decals to set, I decided to put the fuel tanks together........ what a bad fit they were. Check out the huge difference around the edge of this......
So I spent ages cleaning up two of the fuel tanks - making the side match up.... after spending the best part of an hour cleaning up a single pair, I took a break.... and flicking through some photo's, discovered that the fuel tanks were actually correct!!?? WTF??!! I have photos that actually show that difference between the two halves. Buggered if I was going to undo what I'd done, so two of the fuel tanks are going to be odd.....
Also spent ages masking all the transparencies. I've taken to lining the frames with a fine point Gundam paint marker, so that when the tape is on, the frames are far more obvious when trimming the tape away....
So now everything is ready for the final leg - undercarriage, props, bay doors, and antennas will go on tomorrow - once the cement is dry, the transparencies will be added, then a hit of dullcoat..... and done!

Re: CAG's Revell \ Monogram Black Widow
Wonderful work on a real classic. I bet Monogram/Revell has sold a ton of these and I have yet to see one built up.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale
Re: CAG's Revell \ Monogram Black Widow
thanks Jeff - I am really enjoying this build. I know I keep saying it - but who cares if it is an old kit with a few "issues".... it's fun!!! I've seen a few built up - but given the numbers that must have been sold, you are right - finished ones do seem to be rare.

Re: CAG's Revell \ Monogram Black Widow
Well, you're doing some great work on it.
Re not seeing many made up, I'm guessing it's not a small beast in 48th. Perhaps that puts some people off. Also, I'm betting that others are put off by the raised panel lines.
Personally your build - and the Twin Mustang - are making me want to hunt out the few Monogram kits in my stash and make 'em as is. The 1/48th Typhoon 1b comes to mind . . .
regards,
Martin

The (almost) final installment!!

Done. I'll post some better pics tomorrow - these shots were taken at the workbench, where the light for photo's isnt that good for big subjects......
The only real weathering I've done is some exhaust staining. I tried some of the Tamiya Weathering Master stuff - have to say - it's excellent. So easy to apply, and looks good. Nice and subtle on the black.
Decals settled nicely under a coat of Testors Dullcote
Red wing striping was fun - you have to cut the lengths yourself.... Note the missing window in the tail section. Second last piece to be fitted, and guess what? Fed the carpet monster
Overall, an enjoyable build, to say the least. And those windows everyone says are such an issue on this kit? Dropped straight into place!!
And I did find time for one other little thing...... it's to go on the base along with a couple of palm trees I have ordered from Evilbay...... (It's an IJN Komatsu Dozer)
So - some better pics tomorrow folks - it's been a real pleasure doing this one!

Would love to lay my hands on the Typhoon..... I've go the Eduard Tempest, they'd make a beautiful pair.Martin R wrote:Well, you're doing some great work on it.

That's definitely an aircraft that looks like it was designed to do hard business...and your model does it proud.
Well done.

Re: CAG's Revell \ Monogram Black Widow
Thanks Bruce...... that's one of the things I like about it - it looks like something that was designed for just one purpose - to ruin someones day. Never did like "pretty " aircraft.....

WOW that has come on leaps and bounds! It looks tremendous and great fun to build. These great old Monogram kits do really need to be celebrated.

Thanks to everybody for their comments and encouragement on this - it's the first time I have ever been involved in a GB, and it wont be the last. It's been a real pleasure sharing the build!!
