One of my favorite's is John Le Carre and I have been working through his spy novels for years; I just finished the last featuring George Smiley and am now catching up on a few w/o Smiley.

I also read Alan Le May's The Searchers, his 1954 western novel on which the John Ford/John Wayne 1956 movie was based. The movie is one of my favorites and while the movie is different (aren't they always), I don't think the book was disrespected.
Have you seen the film 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'? runs pretty close to the book and Le Carre also has a non credited role in the film.

Yes, specifically. I think I've seen all the films, I'll have to double check.

I think it was Belize, Guatemala or Honduras were getting aggressive and looking to take it over. If I remember correctly. Carrier sailed all the way from Norway at a heck of a lick!.

Just read 'HMS Marathon' by A. E. Langsford. Story about a Cruiser on the Malta Convoys during WW2. It's not so much the story of the ship that made it a good read but the story of the Captain and it's not about gun ho fighting against the odds but about the effects of war on people. Don't want to say too much because it might give the plot away.

I've posted this a couple of times but for the life of me, "i canny find it Cap'n"

Anyone else heard of Ernest K. Gann?

I'm more than halfway through his book 'Fate is the Hunter'! It is a cracking book, even though i've read it before a few times i still dont want to put it down, its so good!

I will no doubt read it numerous times as its a cracking book, My father highly recommended that i find a copy and read it and the internet makes that even more possible today, it was out of print 15 - 20 years ago! Fascinating book, I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in aircraft and flying.

Really enjoy Ernest Gann. Fate is the Hunter the movie, while different, was entertaining. A great author. My personal favorite is Island in the Sky.

Ernest K Gann is one of my favorites. Fate is the Hunter is more than just flying & airplanes, but a lesson in life - reminds me of the old saying "It's a sad day when a pilot makes his last flight, even sadder when he doesn't know it." Island in the Sky is also good, and is a movie.. He has several others.

Island in the sky! Thank you, is it based on real life/flying, or just fiction? Will have a look for that. I know he also does some books that are fiction.
John you are correct in your description and I happen to like what he says, the lessons can still be used today. While there are no pictures, every page is an illustration!

Also look for Those Who Fall by John Muirhead; excellent book by a pilot flying with the 301st Bg of the 15th USAAF in Italy. Another very well written book! Guys from that era tend to be very good writers.

Mark, Island in the Sky is based on a real-life incident. Although the real-life story is mentioned in Fate is the Hunter, Island in the Sky stands on its own as a book and a movie.
