AndrewR's Italeri Apache Longbow in 1/72 **Repaired***
The boxart:
British Army AH Mk 1's, to use the British Army terminology, do not carry Stinger missiles in the boxes on the ends of the stub wings, so these will be left off.
The colour guide:
Some sloppiness by Italeri - the British army is not the Royal Army, and the Dutch Apache Longbows are operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force!
The sprue shots look extremely similar to the Airfix boxing. You do get an Italeri branded paintbrush in the box though.
Our Glorious GB Leader, Shaun has already commented on the rivet detail. I will be gently sanding it down a bit. Looking at photos of the real thing, there are quite a lot of recessed holes for panel fasteners in various places, but not many rivets visible.
The decals are different, as the Italeri versions give you some US markings too
This kit apparently represents a prototype version, modified from the AH64A, not a production US version of the AH64D. There are also some differences from the US version to the WestlandAgusta licence built versions, notably the communications fit for the British versions and the folding rotors, as the British version can be deployed aboard ship. I think I'm going to do mine OOB and just not worry about these details.
Edit: we've now established that there seem to be two versions of the Italeri kit, the earlier one I mentioned above, and a later version with the avionics bays looking a bit better. The Airfix kit that Shaun is building is the same as mine, the later version. Curiouser and curiouser...
cheers
Andrew

There was almost no choice at the LHS in 1/72 scale, when I went looking for a kit. It was either this one or the Comanche...Dirkpitt289 wrote:Nice Choice Andrew
But it looks to be pretty nice, on the sprues at least. The size of the canopy was a bit of a shock - it's a HUGE greenhouse. On the other hand it should be quite easy to mask - lots of nice straight lines and large panes of perspex.
I have some pilot figures to pop in too, so it can be "in flight".
cheers

That's the same box art as the Italeri offering that was in my LMS. The sprues in yours are a nicer colour than the Airfix version for starters! I am also planning an OOB build so that I can also ignore any accuracy issues. Unless that is I get tempted by any piccies on Google Images, which could mean hours messing about with bits of wire and plastic card to virtually no avail other than to DNF on the GB

When you start leading the GB, you will morph into "Imperious Leader".ShaunW wrote:

I was sort of vaguely looking at some photoetch , but I've taken a tablet and had a lie down and that idea has passed on.
The main issue I see with my build is that I don't get the nice instrument panel decals that you do, so I'll have to see what can be done with painting.
cheers

So that's why the Airfix kit was two quid more thenAndrewR wrote:

But I got an Official Italeri paintbrush in my set.ShaunW wrote:So that's why the Airfix kit was two quid more thenAndrewR wrote:

Wait a few years and it'll be a collector's item.
That's funny, I was going to do that too.ShaunW wrote:I'll watch his build and copy the bits that I likedid_nev wrote:In fact, you both are doing a shared build within a GB... Will be nice to see how you two tackle these kits
We can change your monicker to "Plagiaristic Leader",
Anyway, I'm looking at ways and means to print out a few decals for the instrument panels.
Cheers

I've discovered that Italeri do a Gift set, 71080, with 4 paints, liquid glue and a paintbrush. That probably explains why I got the brush - it's in the wrong boxing!

No that's "cherished" not "perished"...
