Paul has a Handasyde **FINISHED** 1/26/13

What did your Secret Santa send you this Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice? Did you get a Trumpeter 1/48 Lump of Coal, or a nice old Airfix classic? Your builds should be chronicled here, starting Decmber 25th (ho, ho, ho!) and lasting through January 31st. Admins: Brickie and Paul Bradley

Cheers, Adrian.

Quick update. I added a clear orange coat to the wood finish, as I thought it looked a bit too dark - a simple mix of some Future/Klear and a drop each of yellow and red food colourings. Who needs Tamiya Clear Orange? :ha:  Painted up some of the details as well - nothing worth getting the camera out and all the faffing about with photobucket....

Also, I see that Eduard does a set of 1/48 PE WWI spoked wheels, so I think I'll order a set of those. They come in a variety of sizes, so I would hope one will match.

Finally, the clear decal paper was ordered, so opefully that will arrive by the weekend. It is a long weekend here, so I'm hoping to break the back of the remaining work. He said, confidently.....

I have some photoetch spokes for WW1 planes in 1.72 from the generic Airwaves set - I think they're about 10 mm diameter, would they be any use Paul?

The decal paper works great and I've applied them to the wings. Bottoms:

..and tops:

And a little playing around:

I noticed after taking the photos that they were slightly mis-aligned from wing to wing, but I was able to re-float a pair and they are all even now.

The tops will receive a light coat of 'linen' tomorrow, then it'll be time to get stuff glued together.

Cheers, Adrian. I'll post a photo of the final effect later - it is something I saw recently online, I just can't remember where.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the translucent wing effect works. It will add so much to the finished model.

Pretty effective, I think:

It is just barely visible in natural light, which is just the effect I was looking for. Please ignore the un-natural lighting artifacts on the photo - I'm still trying to get to grips with this new camera.

Now I can crack on with final assembly.

Cheers, Splash.

Moving on quickly, I've got the basic airframe assembled. The wheels are just pushed on - I am waiting for some PE spokes to arrive.

Need to do some more work on the pilot, he's not ready for a close-up yet!

Here's the front end:

Somehow, I am going to have to work out a new rigging diagram, as the one in the instructions is hazy at best. Period photos are a bit problematic as well. I'll do the best I can...

That's looking really good, Paul.

It'd make a good talking point in your office (if you have one) sitting on a wood base in a small display case and given a prominent position on your desk.

Martin

Cheers, martin.

My office co-workers already think I'm weird - I watch PBS rather than stupid reality shows, don't drink, smoke or do drugs and I prefer soccer and cricket to baseball and basketball, so taking this to the office would only 'confirm' their impression......
