AndrewR's Tamiya Kettenkrad 1/48 *** Fertig! ***
Re: AndrewR's Tamiya Kettenkrad 1/48
No time to Blitz, Andrew? The way you're going at the moment with all your builds you might as well be blitzing them all!
I'm a mostly full-time modeller put a part-time poster....

It's the 24 hours of modelling. I have to spread that over 24 days...Ian wrote:No time to Blitz, Andrew? The way you're going at the moment with all your builds you might as well be blitzing them all!

Re: AndrewR's Tamiya Kettenkrad 1/48
A little work on Gefreiter Schmidt today. He got a facial.
As a base shade I used the colour mixed from Vallejo Flesh base, red and light brown. Once that was dry I used the Vallejo flesh tone wash, and then the brown umber wash. The base colour is in the mixing cup directly below the figure in the picture.
Here he is along with an Emil fuselage at close of play.
Cheers
Andrew

I wouldn't have to scratchbuild it, quarter scale is a Doll's house scale, so I can buy pretty much any home decor itemmightymikeD wrote:Please to be scratchbuilding a wee piano for Gefreiter Schmidt.. his left hand technique looks very promising

Take a look at the whole emporium:

I reckon the Afrika Korps could probably do with the Ping Pong table, or maybe one of the comfy chairs...

I just noticed that there's actually a model kit in 1/48...mightymikeD wrote:The diorama possibilities boggle the mind

Hmm!
Rommel in his command tent making a Revell of Germany kit...
What a diorama that would be...
No more progress on Gefreiter Schmidt, but I have found a paint guide with Vallejo colour suggestions.

The Grand, of course!Narayan wrote:Which piano are you going for though?
I painted the driver today. The first figure in a larger scale than 1/72 since, well, last century...
I used a base coat of Vallejo Russian Uniform, and then a mixture and then a final shade. For the jacket's final shade I used Vallejo dark sand, and for the trousers, Vallejo Green Ochre (they're supposed to represent "requisitioned" Italian desert trousers).
I also read that scarves were in fashion in the Afrika Korps, replacing collar and tie, so I've given him a rather fetching cravat in US Intermediate Blue. I hope he doesn't get into trouble for being out of uniform
Then he got a wash with Vallejo umber shade. It's not bad, but I'd like to retouch the paint in a couple of places. The flash does the picture no favours either. The effect is better in natural light.
The final project for the day was to start on the base. I had a little photo frame from a Jumble Sale, so I took the glass out and then added some foam sheet pieces to break up the flatness. These were stuck on with Pritt.
Then I dolloped on a load of white PVA glue and covered the foam with papier mache, using kitchen roll. I like this better than newsprint because it absorbs the glue better and is softer. Newsprint is also a pain to paint...
The main snag with kitchen roll is that you have to get rid of all those little dimples. After all, we all know that the Western Desert isn't covered in little dimples, don't we?
A few places can be left flat.
Now the base gets left overnight. Tomorrow we'll check for dimples, and also edges that didn't get glued down and obvious creases in the covering layers.
Cheers
Andrew

It's a great set for a diorama - lots of bits and pieces, an oil drum, ammo boxes, Jerry cans etc.mightymikeD wrote:Blimey! A Diorama! This SS is the "Gift That Keeps On Giving".. Kudos to whoever it was!
Perfect present

This morning, a good coat of a cheap acrylic paint as the undercoat. This always takes along time to frydry.

It's looking great.
It's hard to believe its only 1/48 scale.
