Re: AndrewR's Matchbox Hawker Tempest
aaaaaaah, RLM27 . It comes very close. Decals do look to dark, the brownish tint probably comes from the lightning, does it look too brownish in the daylight?

RLM 27 is still a touch too yellow, there is more orange in it than that. RAL 1005 Honey Yellow looks closer, but still not quite right.Marek wrote:aaaaaaah, RLM27 . It comes very close. The paint that comes closest to my eye is Vallejo Model Colour 911: light orange.

If anyone is interested, the English town Saffron Walden got it's name from the crocus, which was extensively grown in the area.AndrewR wrote:See here for details, it's the stamen of a crocus, used for medicinal purposes and as a dye. This font colour is about the right RGB hex value. The decals look a bit too brown to me.Marek wrote:I just learned a new colour - Saffron . Sounds more like a lady's clothing piece. Seriously though, I'll run through some older decals I have, I may be of help if it comes to Indian roundels, perhaps even letters and numbers if I find old ESCI sheet.

I didn't know that Saffron was an extremely valuable commodity several hundred years ago, so anywhere that crocus grew was likely to be a wealthy area.Ian wrote:

I was posted there for a couple of years, and although a wealthy area it was a dump. Squaddies were banned from most places IIRC.AndrewR wrote: so anywhere that crocus grew was likely to be a wealthy area.

The peak in the saffron trade was 17th century, I think, so it was probably past its best when you were there ChipMolly-new wrote:I was posted there for a couple of years, and although a wealthy area it was a dump. Unless you were driving Cromwells for the man himself...

Re: AndrewR's Matchbox Hawker Tempest
I added my token cockpit improvement, an instrument panel from plastic card, to one side of the fuselage, and the seat to the locating lug on the other side. THis was to make airbrushing the interior a bit easier.
The wheel covers got sanded down considerably, thus doing double duty - getting rid of sink marks and making the covers a little more plausible in thickness.
Then a bit of priming. Sand for the pilot figure, as it provided a nice base for flesh tones on the Tamiya figures from the Sectret Santa Build. Dark grey for every other part. I've done the interiors and also most of the exterior bits like wheels, exhausts etc. The one thing I forgot to prime was the propellor.
I've also sprayed the wheel wells.
I want to try and make them look a little different from the overall high speed silver (for which I will use Aluminium), so I'll probably spray with Steel, just for effect.
Not bad for a Monday.
cheers

Re: AndrewR's Matchbox Hawker Tempest
The pilot had his face washed with flesh tone wash, and the rest of his body with umber wash. He's been installed in the cockpit and the fuselage is together. Everything fits rather well
I've put the wings together, but I want to drill out the wing root intakes before I install them on the fuselage. Great fun, I'd forgotten how nice some of these old Matchbox kits are. Photobucket is not behaving, so no pictures this evening. Sorry!
Cheers

Re: AndrewR's Matchbox Hawker Tempest
Here are the pictures from last night.
The wings aren't stuck on yet, I was just seeing how the fit will be. It looks like most of the issues will be on the undersides, which is good
cheers

I was busy uploading the pictures last night, got to 96% of the first one, and a message flashes up "http: error" and that was it for Photobucket for the night...Jagewa wrote:Pictures! pictures! phew! I thought you were joining Martin's radio building show

The Revell offering isn't as good as this
This one with some of the recent and excellent Revell decals would be great.
