Re: Frog DH Hornet (F239) 1/72 - AndrewR and Lancfan
As I feared, most of the evening was spent marking. I did put a few decals on the Fokker Dr.1 and I tried to tidy up the canopy on the Hornet. I mixed some of the white Vallejo plastic putty with some Vallejo Model Colour Black-Grey to make a grey plastic putty, and spread this into the gaps around the canopy with a toothpick. If any gets under the canopy and is visible, then at least it will be in a grey colour which tones in with the cockpit and upper surfaces. I've left it to dry overnight now. I also sprayed the remaining propeller blades. Looking at the blue on the spinners, I might have to redo one because I missed a patch in front of one blade. It's a bit too obvious to ignore!

Brilliant work guys, its just my luck I have won two Frog Hornets and three Sea Venoms on ebay as part of a 12 kit job lot.
I'm to late to join you on this build but will use your thread as a reference when I build mine.

Splash,
I'd be more than happy to help you out by taking one of the FROG Hornets off your hands . . .
regards,
Martin

I haven't forgotten the Sea Venom SB build either! May is looking a bit busy though if I do both the Dambusters and Mustang GBs.splash wrote:Brilliant work guys, its just my luck I have won two Frog Hornets and three Sea Venoms on ebay as part of a 12 kit job lot.

Sorry Martin it was the Hornets and the naval a/c in the job lot that made me take a chance.Martin R wrote:Splash,

I was thinking of doing the Hornets as Sea Hornets but if I change my mind you will get first choice

Plodding along...
The props are just blutacked on at the moment. The spinners need quite a bit of work. The grey plastic putty seems to have worked well. A bit of sanding is called for, but I'm going to mask the canopy first to protect it.
Getting there, very slowly...
cheers

Keep plodding Andrew, it's looking good from here. In fact, this has been a very interesting build by both of you and I've enjoyed your efforts in making a pair of very nice replicas from this CBK.

It's still goingjssel wrote:Good stuff, Andrew. Keep it going.
I cleaned up the spinners and brush painted them with pthalo blue acrylic - a cheap pot of Ceramcoat paint I got a while back to touch up decals on my Blue Impulse Sabre. The coverage, on top of the existing matt blue, was excellent. The blades got a brushing with black to tidy them up.
Then the canopy was masked, a bit of grey putty was mixed up, applied around the canopy framing, allowed to dry and sanded back. A quick blast of Medium Sea Grey, gives this result:
Not bad, but I can see a few places where I might need to sand back some more.
Definite progress though. I am expecting to be busy over the weekend, as another 130 exam papers have appeared for me to mark How much time I get on the builds is anyone's guess!
cheers

A bit more sanding...
and another coat of Medium Sea Grey!
I tried, unsuccessfully, to put a white decal stripe on the spinners. There's a problem with that blue paint - it's too water soluble and stains the Pledge I use to bed down the decals blue!
Maybe I'll try varnishing it and see if that helps.
cheers

Re: Frog DH Hornet (F239) 1/72 - AndrewR and Lancfan
After messing around with the decals on one spinner last night, I now have one prop being very shiny (from the Pledge) and the other not!
The plane has had a first coat of satin varnish. Not enough to take down the gloss over the decals, but I was cautious and only sprayed a thin film. I don't want to mess up the finish at this stage.
The navigation lights have been installed and painted with clear green and red. They have not been covered with clingfilm yet. The pitot tube is a large staple which was attached to some packaging material.
I can see some places near the exhaust manifolds where I haven't cleaned up the plastic putty!
cheers

I have been busy with life stuff for the last few days and then the Dambusters GB began. Here is the freshly made canopy ready for cleaning up and fitting.

Now roughly cut to size and placed loosely over the cockpit before final trimming and separating after which it will be ready to be fitted.

Now I am intrigued. 'covered with clingfilm'? Is this some technique to make them shiny? Can you please elaborate, Andrew.AndrewR wrote: >
