New Airfix Tiffie, anyone?

Post by Martin R »

Yep, I plan a quick build of the new-tool Airfix Typhoon starting "soon". I apologise if the kit hasn't reached other parts of the world yet, but it does appear freely available in the UK - via e-bay if not the LMS.

For me, this would be a completely oob build using kit decals; the idea would be to complete it almost as a build review to help those who want to find out where the bodies are buried. This is a kit I think I'll build again and again, so I'm happy with a "quick and dirty" attempt.

Anyone interested?

regards,

Martin

Stuart,

Thanks for the response. I will be building the kit again, so maybe next time.

Paul,

When would be good for you to start? I was thinking this week sometime, but will you have a kit by then?

regards,

Martin

Ooops, I didn't notice this was in shared builds.....I thought you were offering to do a quick build for the benefit of the rest of us....! No way I'll be getting one of these before the summer, given Airfix's poor distribution to the rest of the world.

It would make a good SKGB subject for later this year or even early next year.

Quite true but watching Martin build his model will be most interesting nontheless.

Too late!!! After Paul's admission of his senior moment re comprehension :ha: I couldn't wait! May have to re-post this on Av Modelling or WW, but anyhoo . . .

Here's what you get in the box. Not bad for £7.99 or ~ 2 pints down here in the Sarff.

Image

A couple of shots of the cockpit going together. Nothing fancy here, like picking out details or washing; nothing will be seen with the canopy closed anyway.

Everything fits as it should. Level of detail good. I only used the decal for the main part of the IP, cutting off the two 'wings' at the bottom (which have raised detail anyway, which I dry-brushed). I still managed to rip the decal, but got away with it. The tailwheel hub detail is as indistinct as I thought it was, which should cause some fun when detail painting, and I am unconvinced with the shape of the fin leading edge; it looks too curved to my eye. Novel radiator trunking / wheelwell / cockpit 'floor' piece fits pretty well, but hold onto it until your adhesive of choice 'grabs'.

Image

Here's where I got to after a couple of hours of work. I could have gone on but I thought I'd let the glue dry (main seams are plastic weld applied by brush, except for the radiator housing, where I went with zap-a-gap and accelerator to fill a seam (see next pic).

Image

Wing underside looks like it'll fit nicely. It's pretty 'floppy' when you take it off the sprue, but the mainwheel bays will stabilise it nicely.

It's been a lovely wee kit so far.

That looks like yet another great new tool from Airfix Martin. £7.99? that's about 2 1/2 pints up here in the North, jeez beer is getting expensive in the pub

Great work as usual Martin. The engineering looks interesting! A one piece lower wing is a good idea though.

Cheers

Nice! Interior looks very good for the price point.
