Post by despondman »

Just finished this Hobby Boss Easy Assemble Typhoon Mk.1B, easy to build and great fun:

Have the new Airfix Typhoon to build also, but the next on the workbench is this:

I will do this OOB with wheels up, but at some future date will be looking to do the Hawk T1 in Spitfire camo as per the topic Spitfire Question which looks great.

Good job on the Typhoon. A camo'd Hawk will look nice with it.

Nice Typhoon! 8-)
Matchbox had a camo scheme for the Hawk, didn't it? (with some rocket pods as well I think)

Some progress made on the Hawk. I really need to buckle down an put more effort into cockpits. Generally I just want to get them done quickly so I can get on with the rest of the build.

I made some progress on the Hawk but after a diversion to do the blitzbau I have put the hawk on hold and decided to have a quick bash at the PM Model Spitfire VB Tropical which as you can see is a very basic model. I do like the colour scheme though, which for me is always something which attracts me to a model, and this should be a quick build and finish.

Great progress on the Hawk.
I built a PM Spitfire Vc back in 2005. Simple but fun build.

I started this Workbench Window not long after I joined the forum, but a Blitzbau and Group Build, and several weeks of enforced modelling inactivity meant it fell by the wayside. Wasn't sure whether to resurrect it but have decided to give it a go starting with an update on the models I am in the process of building.

Airfix Spitfire Mk1a. Good progress has been made on what is an lovely model. I decided to apply all the stencils, and I am half way through doing that. Not sure in my own mind if that is worthwhile as many are so small that once applied they can hardly be seen, but I want to do it and then decide if it is worthwhile for 1/72 models in future. Also have done my first oil wash to the underside and am happy with how it went.

Airfix Curtis Tomahawk IIB. Another lovely model, going well so far. Bought 2 of these when Wilkinson were selling them off for £4.

Image

Airfix Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter. Not a good model, nothing seems to fit, and I have not done a great job with it. The idea here was a 'Whatif', depicting the F-5A in a RAF WWII colour scheme.

Image

Airfix BAe Red Arrows Hawk. I initially painted this in acrylic paint but after gloss varnishing it didn't like the finish. So I stripped the paint off and painted it in enamel, but still didn't like the finish. After a bit of Googling, and finding many people commenting that they couldn't get a nice gloss finish with acrylic paint and gloss varnish, and reading some tips for correcting that, I stripped off the enamel and repainted with acrylic. A lot better now.

Image

One other problem though. I have found like others before me that you should apply the decals on the underside before the fins, now I have to decide whether to leave the underside decals off (not what I want), remove the fins, apply the decals then refit the fins (probable solution), or carefully cut the decals so I can fit them around the fins.

I'd be too worried about damaging the paint finish :omg if I pulled the strakes off, so I'd cut the decals. But then I'm a big scaredy cat

It looks very nice though - good red finish!

There's some great work going on here Despond. Likewise with the Hawk, I think I'd try cutting the decals as forced removal of those strakes will more than likely damage that lovely red paintwork.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Work is the curse of the modelling classes!

Some good stuff going on here. Nice paintwork on all of them.
You could try laying the decal on the plane, before you've soaked it, marking where the strakes are and then just make some small cuts in the decal before applying. Good luck however you go about it.
