Am I missing something or is this that rare? Going by the number of bids I presume it must be something special.

It must be because it's a Frog original boxing. The same plastic has been issued by Hasegawa and Revell:

The Matchbox ones the same seller is listing look like better builds and significantly better value for money, if you actually want to build the kit, rather than just collect it. :) (Lancfan is going to build one in the Ted Taylor Tribute GB).

This is a very early frog of the lightning prototype and is not the same as the much later kit of the production variant that was shared with hasegawa. Note the lack of shock cone. It is rare and collectible. Merlin models did a knock off copy of it which like most of their stuff was very poor.
