Jim's big guns
Oh yes indeedy, a Hurricane IID for me..
Using a Revell IIB
and 3d-kits gun pods, and decals.
I'll try to do a Matchbox IIC as well,
as the night fighter option.
Cheers

Revell Sprues:
Revell Decals
Though I'll sort through my spares for C and C1 roundels and fin flash, as I'll do an option form the 3D-Kits gun pods.
Here's the 3D-Kits sprues:
Two of these:
Look very nice and crisp.
Decals:
And the three options:
Probably do option 1, as the tank busters are synonymous to the desert scheme.

Re: Jim's big guns
So today, I decided to try and reduce the panel lines a bit on the Matchbox, by going over the trenches with Tamiya Surface primer.
Found an Airfix Volkes filter in the spares for the Revell IID:
also sorted out a couple of pilots, I'm not using the Matchbox guy, and using a big Revell RAF figure..
The Revell figure is rather big, I'll have to chop the rudder pedals off for him to fit.
Cheers

Re: Jim's big guns
That gunpod looks pretty neat,Jim...and more detailed than I would have thought: is there an option to display the gun in the pod?

Re: Jim's big guns
Simon, yes you can leave the covers of the pods off and display the guns, the black square decal is to go on the underside of the wing, to represent the hole for the ammo drum. They also come with two ammo boxes so you can do a diorama.
Just been doing a bit of sanding of the filler in the Matchbox lines..
Also painting the crews..
Night fighter pilot
And the big guns pilot. Flesh over the uniform gives him baggy skin arms and legs.
I'll give them a wash next.
Cheers

Re: Jim's big guns
Thanks, Jim, I checked out their site and think that I could be tempted into one of these conversions...a shame that they do not do it in 1/48 as I already have a IID in that scale stashed away somewhere...

Re: Jim's big guns
Looking good, Jim.
The Matchbox Hurri has great nostalgia value for me. When I was but a nipper, my Dad helped me build it. I remember he used automotive spray paint for the spinner (he had a red Alfasud back then) and I remember it stank as it dried on top of the TV!
Looking forward to seeing what you do with these.
regards,
Martin

Re: Jim's big guns
Yep nostalgia alright, my favourite kit was the Matchbox Hurricane, my goto model for our air battles, and when I read Battle Magazine, Johnny Red was one of my favourite strips, with his Hurricane, that could fly rings around every other plane... http://www.falconsquadron.sevenpennynig ... .uk/?cat=3
I'm not going to be doing much to these, just want some straight forward builds, I've got enough box queens that I started to get carried away on..
Got a good few hours on the Hurris today, my wife took the kids to sport so I was able get stuck in..
Got the pilots finished and all in posistion..
IID:
The Revell pilot needed a bum and heel reduction, also a slight shoulder nip and tuck, but he is comfortable now.
The fuselage came together really well, and fit has been fantastic so far, I'm liking this kit.
Blocked the landing lights with some sections of sprue, and will let if al set up hard before I start fillingint he IIB gun port and hatches on the wings.
Matchbox IIC:
Absolutely standard Matchbox cockpit, otherwords just the bench seat, I don;t think you;d be able to see anything I could add in there anyway.
Wings went together well, only one landing light cut out, the other had panel lines around it but was solid plastic, so I've opened it up.
It looks like the fuselage has quite a gap, almost like the mating faces weren't square, but it might be the white primer has exaggerated it, have to see once it's all set.
Cheers

Always happy to support Kiwi model shops: I have one inbound for which I have interesting plans as it helps me solve one of those 'what on earth should I do with this kit?' questions...

Re: Jim's big guns
Not much modeling time and just some filling and sanding on both kits. Got the tailplanes on both, the Revell ones are much larger than the Matchbox I ones. Though the Matchbox has a huge carburettor intake compared with the Revell...
Think I'll go with the Revell intake on the Matchbox kit, and I'm using an Airfix Vokes intake on the Revell..
Certainly enjoying both kits, though I can't see the sense in the wing joint of the Revell kit.
Cheers

Re: Jim's big guns
Did Matchbox sneak a 1/48 carburettor intake in there?
